Okay, since I failed reading a book in November (it’s already December here now) because of my super hectic schedules, I figured I could go ahead and change the name of this goal. Why not?
So from now on, read at least one book each month will be read regularly. I’ll determine what ‘regularly’ means later.
emiliakaarina has written 20 entries about this goal
Things are looking quite desperate this month, I just simply do not have time to read for fun, I’ve been so busy. And the rest of the month won’t bring any change, on the contrary in fact.
... Unless I can find a really short book and then squeeze in some time for reading into my schedule. I wouldn’t want to mess up my progress with this goal either.
I guess articles about translation studies etc. won’t count, hm. If that were the case, I would have achieved my goal several times this month.
(3/9/2009)
15. Terry Pratchett – The Light Fantastic (Valon tanssi)
Very, very enjoyable. Will be reading more of the Discworld books, I’m pretty hooked now.
August’s first read,
14. Lewis Carroll: Phantasmagoria and Other Poems (Fantasmagoria ja muita runoja)
A poem collection by the man behind Alice in Wonderland, translated into Finnish. I normally don’t read a lot of poetry, it’s not really my thing, but I was interested enough to try this one. I liked it, some of the poems were very good.
It was also sometimes interesting to see how the translator had solved some parts.
Read this in the beginning of the month, mostly on the bus to the airport when I was picking Max up.
Fifth book for July! :D This has been a rather good reading month.
13. Holly Black & Tony DiTerlizzi: Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles 1: Nixie’s Song (Spiderwickin Kronikat II, kirja 1 – Lammenneidon laulu)
Speedread through this one yesterday at the library. I’ve read the first series of the Spiderwick Chronicles, so I figured I could read one of the new ones as well.
I’ve never really thought that these are very good books, they could be written so much better, even for children’s books. Feels like there’s something missing, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. But at least the illustrations are great, I guess they’re the biggest reason I’ve read these books, in addition to fairytale creatures, heh.
Fourth book for July! Yay!
12. Mike Mignola & Duncan Fegredo: Hellboy – Darkness calls (Pimeys kutsuu)
Again, a Finnish edition. This time Mignola had hired a helper, artist Duncan Fegredo; I liked his drawings and enjoyed the whole reading experience. Good story. It was also nice that this time the comic book was in colour.
Third book for July, woot!
11. Mike Mignola: Hellboy – contained the stories Seed of Destruction, Wake the Devil and Almost Colossus
A Finnish (colourless) edition of Hellboy. Juho bought it a few beeks back and on Thursday night at Juho’s I just picked it up and didn’t put it down before I finished the whole thing! :D I like the drawing style and the characters. I probably might not have liked these graphic novels that much if I hadn’t seen the movies before, I think they might have been a bit too dark for me without the context of the movies. I know it sounds odd, but that’s how I feel. The movies are “brighter”. I love the movies and the comics were very good, too.
I’m totally buying the sequel for the Finnish edition next week, hah.
9. Terry Pratchett: The Colour of Magic (Magian väri)
I have read some of Pratchett’s books before and have enjoyed his writing a lot. But I hadn’t read any of the books that are based in the Discworld yet. I figured I should finally do that and started with the very first Discworld book.
And I loved it! I had so much fun reading the book, I truly enjoyed it. :) So witty, so funny, so interesting.
Oh and I read this in Finnish, just to keep track of the original vs. translation ratios.
10. Lewis Carroll: Through the Looking Glass
I wish I had also read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in English, because I just totally loved reading the sequel in the original language! And what a book this is! ♥ I completely adore it now. It’s full of such cute, silly things, wonderful dialogues (and monologues), interesting ideas and questions, mysteries of a child’s mind and all imaginable greatness! I’m pretty much ready to declare this as one of my favorite books! :)
You’d get so many awesome quotes out of this book, I couldn’t even keep track of them all. Bucketloads of brilliance!
It’s only the 8th day of this month and I’ve already finished two books, yay! :) This makes me very happy.
Though granted, most of The Colour of Magic was read during June.
