Bye bye bunnies 2 weeks ago

Tupuna and Pieni left yesterday, after staying with me for 25 days. I unfortunately couldn’t keep them any longer as I was getting too busy with my studies to take care of the animals properly, and Christmas was going to be impossible because I couldn’t have taken the bunnies with me around the country and I couldn’t have left them alone either. So now they’re at a new home, even though it’s still a temporary one.
I do really hope that these two rabbit ladies will find a permanent home soon, they definitely do deserve it. They are adorable creatures and I had a very nice time with them. I feel bad for not being able to take care of them longer, but I’m glad that someone could take them in my stead. I also miss them quite a bit already, I hadn’t expected feeling quite like this. I’m sure they’ll be ok, they’re brave bunnies.

To be fair, they also did make me somewhat furious at times. I’ve already mentioned how Pieni is a true adventurer by nature – well, she’s also quite the destroyer of things, too. She loves to chew and she managed to cause damage to a number of my belongings, such as my bed, pillows, bed cover, shoes, sheets, jeans, wallet, books, postcards, curtains, bookshelf and so on. But the thing that disturbed me the most was that she also chewed on my walls: the little wooden panels at the bottom parts and also the plastic “wallpapers” in the bathroom. I really do not want to pay for my flat’s renovation when I move out, that’s why I’m worried. :s

But in any case, this was a great experience and I think I learned quite a lot from it. I’d also like to think that I helped a bit and was of some use, despite of the fact that I had to give the bunnies away to someone before they could find a permanent home. Better luck next time then, I hope.
The next time, indeed… Not quite sure when that will be. I could take a cat next, but it all depends now on when Juho’s flatmate could be moving out. If it happens, let’s say, in February, there’s not really any use for me to take an animal in for such a short time again. So we’ll have to wait a bit and see.

Spreading the word about bunnies 1 month ago

Today I wrote a little piece about Tupuna & Pieni and the animal group posted it to their website, here. Now we’ll just wait and see if someone shows interest in them. I sure hope someone does, because these little ladies sure are sweet! I’ve been having a lovely time with them, we’ve started to bond even more and they make me very joyous.

First I was quite stressed out with Tupuna’s medication routines and the difficulty of catching her, but we’re doing much much better now. :) Besides, tomorrow is the last day that I have to give her the meds! Wohoo! She seems to be doing great, too: her infected eye has healed, the boil on her cheek has dryed out and she’s eating better. This makes me very happy. She also allowed me to get rid of some tangles in her fur today.
I also feel like I’m doing a good job at taking care of them both.

Pieni is quite the adventurer and explorer! She has climbed into the bed several times now and she keeps checking up on us when we’re sleeping. :D Let’s see if she decides to sleep next to me tonight, since Juho isn’t here. Pieni is such a wonderful companion, even if she is totally silly sometimes. Tupuna is becoming braver, too, which has been a delight to see.

They’re so cute and so much fun to be around with. ♥

First protegees: Pieni & Tupuna 1 month ago

These two rabbit ladies arrived yesterday and I was glad to notice that they’re quite brave and curious creatures. They weren’t shy to soon go through my whole apartment and they’ve been coming close to me to check up what I’m doing. Pieni (“Little”, even though she’s bigger than Tupuna) seems a bit braver than her older friend.
They’re both less than a year old and they have a very common bacteria disease. Tupuna has manifested symptoms, so she’s getting antibiotics and eyedrops. It has been a bit of a challenge to give her her meds twice, three times a day, but I hope it starts to go better. Besides, the meds only last for one more week so it’s not so bad. They’ve both been eating and drinking and seem to be doing just fine. They’re also pretty darn cute.

But they sure do make a mess! :D I’m letting them run free in my flat, because they’re used to being free. You should have seen the amount of droppings and sawdust on the floor this morning, eh. I’ll probably be cleaning a lot more when they’re here.

Tupuna sounds like a chicken, by the way. It’s really funny to listen to her.

Next week I’ll write a little description about them after I’ve monitored them enough and the animal group will post it on their website. Let’s hope these bunnies will find a nice new home! In the meantime, we’ll see how long they’ll be staying with me~

Emilia eläimiä pelastamaan! (Emilia to save animals!) 1 month ago

After having this goal for more than 2,5 years I think it’s high time I wrote an entry under it.
I’ve always been a big animal lover, ever since I was a little kid. My immediate family has seen different pets come and go, but because my mother’s quite allergic, we couldn’t usually keep any animals for very long. But I’ve always been in close contact with animals and have learnt to love them so much. Since I’ve been living on my own I’ve experienced different difficulties when it comes to getting pets, mainly landlords’ restrictions. I’m yearning for a pet of my own, but I also want to do more for animals than just own one.

I think that I normally have a lot more empathy and sympathy for animals than humans. I can’t stand to see animals suffer, I just want to help them all so badly. Unfortunately I can’t save all the animals in need of help in the world, I’m no miracle worker after all. But I sure as heck will try.

I used to be a member of WWF (as a rainforest “godmother”, helping to protect the rainforests and their animals) and Animalia, a Finnish animal rights activism group. But recently I haven’t been able to participate, being a poor student and all. I can’t wait to have more money someday and start my charity donations again.
I try to do everything I can in everyday life to help animals. I sometimes even go so far as to relocating snails if they’re in the middle of the road and in risk of getting walked over. :P I feel the need to protect little creatures that can’t protect and stand up for themselves, and that need is very strong.

Today I saw an ad for a local group in prevention of cruelty to animals and I emailed them. They were seeking temporary homes for homeless pets while they were trying to find them permanent homes. I immediately signed myself up, it just sounded so perfect! I’ve been emailing with one of their representatives and they said that I sounded like a very good canditate. :) We’ll get together sometime soon and see where this goes! I’m very excited about this.
