become an international lawyer

Need to stop procrastinating the summer job crap and need to start getting serious about this journal article. My grades for last semester aren’t shaping up to be my best, so I’m going to have to work next semester when I’m taking solely international law coursework.

Yeech. Just working on some of these mock trials reaffirms the fact that I don’t want to be one of these lawyers that is just in and out of trial all the time, moving from one client to the next. Some people thrive on trial work, but I really need to focus on my goal and get cracking on trying to find some interesting international work for this summer.

This has been my goal for awhile now; I know there will be temptations of big firm jobs and lures of money, but this is definitely what I want to do: human rights law.

ETA: Wow, I never expected to get so many comments on this before I was done polishing up my entry. Specifically I am interested in work with criminal tribunals, local governance, and strengthening international NGOs.

I just want to add that I’ve seen many people in college and law school with the ambition to enact social change who abandoned it after the lures of money and prestige. I have very little money myself – and neither does my family – and there have been great pressures by my family to go the firm route. But yeah, I’m not planning on it though.
