I played clarinet for many years and thanks to private lessons and constant practice, I became really good. I was 2nd chair in high school out of 15 other clarinetists and it was a big accomplishment for me. When marching season would end in fall (along with brass section’s glory), and we’d delve into concert band during the spring, I remember what a rush it was to play in festivals and other concerts around the city where woodwinds were the focal point. Being 2nd chair, I also got my share of solos and those were such an honor to have.
I even had the opportunity to play in the “pit” section when our school had theater productions, and was also asked to be part of the All City Orchestra where select musicians from various high schools across the county were requested to play.
During high school, I went through the usual teenage angst, and playing my clarinet was a major release for me and also a way to just escape all of the drama. I always felt at my best when I’d practice.
I yearn to play again so that I can get back in touch with my creative side!
