learn to swim

Excuse #1: Just making room for new items on my list.
Excuse #2: It’s fall already and I really just don’t have the time.
Excuse #3: Um.. maybe later.

When I was five, I nearly drowned in a private swimming pool. Mom was busy chatting with friends, happy for a moment of relief from a needy child. Somehow it was thought that the flailing and gasping I was doing was a bid for attention, but when I went down and didn’t come up it was taken a little more seriously. Since then I have been afraid of the water, and since swimming takes place in the wet stuff, afraid of swimming too. No amount of cajoling, swim classes, and personal instruction from avid friends has been sufficient to overcome it. Yet. Each summer I think, perhaps this time I’ll find a class that works for adults PETRIFIED with fear.

There is a morning class this Saturday, but if I go I will need a new swimsuit. New flip-flops would be great too. Anything to go shopping!
