MythTV is one of those things that only a geek could love. It’s a suite of software that runs on top of the Linux operating system and lets you tape your favorite programs off TV/cable and watch them at your leisure.
It’s enourmously flexible, and will follow your programs around if they change time or even channel. The interface is decent but not amazing.
Non technical folks can be trained to use it, but if you plan to set it up be prepared for some SERIOUS bit twiddling! Given the constantly morphing state of PC hardware, getting a supported mix of software and hardware can be a challenge, and once you have all the requisite drivers set up getting Myth itself going is doable but a sizable task.
I enjoy my MuthTV, but had I known in advance how many man hours it would take to get going, I think I would have researched alternative solutions a bit more carefully.
