I just got a Caribbean Style Stretch into Yoga DVD, so as soon as I figure out how to get my DVD player working, I’ll start using it!



bad habits 17 months ago

1) a tendency to cater to anyone other than myself (who is important in my life. I think most women do this, actually. Living with my young niece and nephew while my sister and her husband both work several jobs and I only work one, I have a tendency to take on caring for the children (whom I love dearly) when I should take care of myself. I put my sister’s sleep ahead of my own and let her get some rest while I attempt to entertain the kids and keep the older one from loving the younger to death (she’s two and has a tendency to smother her 3-month-old brother in hugs).
2) When I feel I have a break and can do what I want, I tend to indulge myself. Not in food, for I don’t have the money to buy anything truly decadent and refuse to pay for anything second-rate. No, I lie down and read for hours on end. I could go to the gym and work out some and then come home and read, but I feel as though I deserve to pamper myself and do so through resting and immediate pleasure, not the slow gratification of getting back in shape. Even knowing this doesn’t help when the time comes to choose which to do. =/

I’m fairly certain that “hone” does not mean gain seven pounds of chocolate stress-eating. EEK! Definitely a big incentive to get working on this again, as little as I feel like it.

I had a goal that was close to this one, but I like the way this goal is phrased- it fits better what I really want to do. I have always been on the heavy side, and it escalated when I was entering puberty (my parents divorced and I moved from the house and neighborhood I had been in all of my life up to that point). I stopped running around with the boys in my neighborhood (mainly because there were only girly girls in my new one) and got into the groove of a sedentary lifestyle for many years. However, my stepdad just died of a heart attack a few weeks ago and I do not want that to happen to me, which I know is a distinct possibility if I stay on the track that I am on, so I’m making several changes in my lifestyle. One of my friends at college has made a committment to work out with me at least once, hopefully twice a week (we are doing scheduling tomorrow after classes) and I am eating in the cafeteria more than other food options because it’s easier to eat healthy when there’s salad and other healthy, ready-to-eat meals readily available (and I love salad so that’s a good thing). This weekend I also picked up a book on toning muscle and some light weights to begin with. =)
