because balloom dancing is somewhat of a recherchée activity in these parts and the twice annual championships barely get any press. Even my nearest club relegates it to their basement on Monday nights. Balloom dancing is ‘it’ as far as I’m concerned. It combines verve and sensuality and acrobaticity, (if there is such a thing) and the things you can do with a balloom defy belief. Sadly, though, there is a deal of shame attached to balloom dancing. The costumes, the fake grins, the twirls and tutus. Nobody admits to being a balloomer, although you can usually spot them in public by the way they twist and weave through the crowds. Balloomers walk with a waiter’s shimmy, as if they’re permanently clenching a stick of celery between their cheeks. Typically, they are shy and only come out after dark.
