Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Are Companies Trying to Cover Up Their Lack of Senior Women?
.View more ..Every morning you wake up a sweaty, disheveled mess and somehow manage to leave the house looking somewhat presentable and ready for business. At least that’s the theory.

The question is does how you look when you leave the house affect how others perceive you? Clothes make the man. But do clothes make the manager? My early bosses certainly thought so. After a few heated confrontations, I finally agreed to clean up my act. And yes, that made a huge difference in my career.

On the other hand, as a wise PR executive once said, “Just because you wear a mock black turtleneck, blue jeans, and sneakers doesn’t make you Steve Jobs.” Well said.

Those conflicting anecdotes aside, the truth is that people notice how you dress, consciously and subconsciously. Actions may speak louder than words, but until they get to judge your behavior, people will inevitably trust their initial impressions.

How you dress matters. How much it matters really depends on how clued-in or clueless you are about this sort of thing. It also depends on what you’ve got under the hood in terms of brains, experience, and reputation. If you’ve got all that, you don’t need no stinkin’ clothes.

For example, one of my former CEOs only owned one tie. No kidding. Six months ago he was pegged to run Nanosolar. Guess it works for him.

On the other hand, when I quit working full-time and became a consultant I started dressing a little differently. People noticed and commented. One CEO said I looked more like a rock star than an executive. Another said I should stand closer to my razor. And that’s just what they said. You’ve got to wonder what they were thinking.

The point is that people notice. They also have preconceived notions about people who dress a certain way. I know I do:

When someone’s smartly dressed in business attire, I think sharp and savvy. Unless of course they turn out to be idiots, in which case they’re just idiots in suits.
When an individual wears jeans and an untucked shirt to a business meeting, I think guts and self-confidence. Unless they turn out to be idiots, in which case they’re just sloppy idiots.
When folks wear business casual – khakis and polo shirts – I think mindless drone or middle manager who won’t take risks.
Again, the point is that, for better or worse, what you wear makes an impression. Here are 7 tips to help you enhance your management presence instead of detracting from it:

1.Early in your career, spiff it up a bit. Later, when you’ve proven yourself, you can relax.
2.Dress for your audience. If you’re presenting or in an important meeting and key people will be wearing business attire, you should too. If you’re not sure, play it conservatively.
3.Dress the way you feel comfortable. Otherwise, it’ll show. No, it’s not okay to wear your pajamas. You’ve got to grow up and put on a suit sometime.
4.In most industries, super-fashionable attire is overdoing it. There are ways to stand out without looking like you’re trying to stand out. Get it?
5.Don’t dress like a drone or a clone, i.e. like everyone else, unless that’s really you or you’ve got so much under the hood that it doesn’t matter.
6.I don’t care how bright and cheerful you feel that morning; work isn’t a circus so don’t dress like a clown, i.e. the large woman from the old Drew Carey Show.
7.If you’re not Steve Jobs, don’t dress like him. He can pull it off; you can’t. Get your own damn uniform.

5-19-07 Status Update

Wow. It has been a while. and for good reason. I’ve been out travelling around the world on semester at sea. This necessitated and allowed me to slack off/refocus to other areas w/ this goal. so while overall i wasn’t keenly focused on it, i did get somethings done (piano lessons, juggling lessons).

i find myself back in the country (with a strong desire to head back out to mexico again) and full of a desire/energy to reflect, refocus and redirect my energy to my physical health and other goals of that nature. i also find myself not at all interested in the material goals on this list.

1. physical fitness needs to be my number one priority. i travel alot for work/clients and this has been a problem, but i see other people with high mobility lifestyles and they make it work.
a. find a gym everywhere i am and where i’m going. i looked up gyms in hampton and i’m going to look at it/them monday. also karate studios and possibly buying a weight bench for my parent’s back yard.
b. water. need to make this my beverage of choice. i’d like to eliminate alcohol, but i’m not sure i really really want to. i’ve done it before, for long periods, but i think i need to eliminate beer altogether and the sweet drinks and go with sparkling water with lemon/lime to reduce calories. red wine and cognac when i want a drink.
c. blog about health and fitness, become an expert. this is a thought, like gretchen rubin’s happiness blog. maybe by immersing myself into all things healthy i’ll reinforce my habits and change my attitudes and actions.

General

a. puncutality still a priority. need to eliminate chaotic lifestyle choices. like this weekend i’m only doing brother’s reception vs. that and uva convocation, etc.

b. vitamins. need to get ‘em.

c. reduce clutter.

d. organize finances and stop being so free w/ money until i build accounts back up.

e. strive for excellence in my work and activities, but have fun.

f. practice juggling, check into piano lessons. make that paper crane. start researching motorcycles.

g. be in it, to win it. live bold. i have lived an amazing 1.5 years and been around the world. i am a superhero. i can do this.

status: robust update

Haven’t done a full update in a while, but I’m really working hard on my halo clients, grad school prep:gre and whatnot. I am way busier than i imagined. BUT I have a slew of dr. apptmts next week: dermatologist (skin not looking clear); dental 1 and 2 (crown replacement and bite eval for new bridge. I’m going to try to sneak into my primary care phys to get my Semester at sea eval done too otherwise I have to wait until 12/8.

15. Maintain professional relationships with mentors/mentees: doing so-so here, need to call Flip and Charlie Hill and Debbie Gentry

28. Beautiful Pens/Writing instruments : not a financial priority

status: teeth

i heard/read somewhere that said you can tell how well someone is taking care of themself(ves) by how they take care of their teeth. This made me realize i need to make sure my smile is as bright and beautiful as it can be. I believe I have a nice, infectous smile and I want it to last until i’m 100! So I went to the dentist twice last week for a cleaning and part 1 of a 2 part crowning. Then on to the bridge replacement strategy and whitening. I’m hoping I can get it done (??) by the time I head back to mexico!

status: poking along

1. Still lurving my white gold diamond earrings.
2. Started back up making my bed every day, got off course when subletting b/c I just had stuff all over the place. The good thing about that is that I realized I don’t like to be messy but its hard when I’m moving around so much. And if you start messy its hard to recover. So I’m making a promise to myself to start of organized when I get to Hanover!
3. Still cool with the make-up every now and then.
4. Found a hairstyle but its kind of hard to maintain but it seems to suit me/my personality.
5. Still haven’t ordered ring/watch. Maybe I’ll do that this week.
1. Lose 100lbs
er, uh I fell off the workout wagon. X
11. Take an acting or speech class or toastmasters course
need to look into a class in Hanover maybe
12. Find a hairstyle that compliments and is easy to maintain
like my twist out afro but its hard to maintain
13. Run consistently to maintain image/esteem/health
X not doing this at all
14. Find Organizer/Productivity System that works for me
like my triumvurate of yahoo calendar, excel projects and daily to-do.
15. Maintain professional relationships with mentors/mentees
so far so good
16. Do not volunteer or commit to anything I am not 100% into
may be over committed on projects but oh well!
17. Well Rounded: Golf, Music, Cooking, Travel, Books, Talents
two cooking classes this summer, enjoying my reading
20. Fun: motorcycle, juggle, billiards, piano
Got motorcycle license last wednesday!
24. Make punctuality a priority
still running like 5 minutes late 50% of the time and I’m tired of it.
25. Make bed daily
working on it. fell off the wagon, but back on. its easier to stay neat when you start neat.
27. High Quality Business Cards/Stationery
on order! i am liking the design though

status: checking in

1. still about 5 minutes late for most appointments. this cost me big for my motorcycle class. I didn’t build in enough travel time so I had to miss class and reschedule which put me 5 wks behind schedule and out $100. This seems to have tripped a wire of some sort b/c now I’m building in more time. I’m realizing that the 5-10 minutes of snooze time (or whatever I’m doing) aren’t worth the stress and poor image of being late.

2. Wearing make-up now and again.

3. Making bed and taking vitamins (mostly) daily. I get thrown off on the weekends b/c my schedule is so crazy.

4. Not losing weight, was really falling in love with my gym time, but i travel so damn much that i fall out of my routine and then a week or two has gone by and i’m back to square one.

5. Put in business card order last week!

6. Still struggling to find a “professional” hairstyle, but have not yet gotten my hair permed. Still need to try other styles.

7. Need to order my watch and ring in time for the AOM conference.

8. My e-mail boxes are out of control, but not yet in a “crisis” mode.

9. Going to the gym tomorrow!

status: improving 7-9-06

1. was punctual all weekend for the NYU seminar
2. i am liking my excel spreadsheet for project management coupled with my yahoo calendar. i need to be consistent.
3. slipping on e-mail box maintenance. it is just overwhelming when you get behind.
4. found a woman with a hairstyle that i LOVE! she said she’d show me how to do it. She’s in Philly so I have to work that out soon!
5. wore make-up consistently this week.

status: me shop? 7-1-06

1. worked out today at 6:30-8:00pm. and I REALLY wanted to just go take a nap. I’m proud of myself. Hard workout too.

2. Found some 14kt white gold diamond earings 1/2 off. Also found a pair of 14kt white gold hoops too! got 1 cool ring and 2 necklaces so I can start switching out of my gold jewelry.

3. Found a michael kors watch i like alot online.

4. bought new mac make-up and got the counterlady (who was gorgeous) to put it on me to make sure i got the right stuff.

5. Bed is being made (mostly) daily.

6. Vitamins being taken (mostly) daily.

7. Stationary came in last week. Its gorgeous!
