In January of 2005, I sat down to write out my five year goals. The list included finishing my Master’s degree, starting a non-profit, and many others. As I finished the list I paused to see if any other goals would come to mind. I wrote “write a book” down on the list. It surprised me because I had never considered this before and I had nothing in mind to write about! Some funny things happened next that have encouraged me to pursue this goal. One of my professors remarked casually “you should be an author” when I felt discouraged. I went to a friend’s wedding in Dallas. At the reception, I randomly found myself sitting with two published authors and an editor. Another time I went to Sarasota, Florida to help a friend move. I went to lunch by the airport and randomly sat by two businessmen at the bar. They both listened to my goal and story ideas and were inspired to help make it happen. There have been several other encouragements along the way – like getting my first article published a couple of months ago. I only wish I had enough money to quit my job and write more often! And wasting time on the internet doesn’t help any either!
