I’ve started a beginners gōng fū course at the Omni, in Edinburgh. It’s a four week course, after which you can join the main class, and the first lesson was brilliant!
The course is run by Chris Davies, a 5th-dan black belt. It’s exactly what I was looking for—a combination of external (strikes, kicks) and internal (qìgōng) training, from a number of different styles. Practical and traditional. I can’t wait for the next class!
My introduction to the martial arts, 武术 (wu3shu4), came when I was about 10 – my mother, looking for an afterschool activity, signed my brother and I up to an aikido class. Great!
In high school I joined another class, a kind of karate that included elements from kali, escrima and muay thai kick-boxing. This was great too, and I kept training for years until I moved away for Uni.
Now it’s been 7 years since, and I’ve realised I was never fitter, and haven’t found any activity that I like quite so much. So I gotta get back into it in Scotland!
