I just struggled whether to maintain as on of my goals writing a screenplay because I consider the theatrical play a “purer” artform. But I wonder if that immediately puts me in conflict with another of my stated goals which is to be less judgemental.
I guess beyond that the thing is that it seems a play is more likely to retain the influence of the writer whereas a screenplay is more at the hands of the director or in big budget instances, the producer, budget, editing, etc. Plays have some of those functions and roles as well of course but it seems to me that I’ve heard expressed in theatrical circles more of a desire to remain true to an author’s original work. In film it seems more of a rarity.
Anyway, I think the point for me whether play or screenplay is to actually get something written. Its the accomplishment of the task that should be key for me but often I fall victim to the expectations of outcome rather than that creative process itself.
