this seems like a worthy goal — 2 months ago
but I almost can’t imagine how I will get this one done. about a year ago, I was fueling about once every 5 or 6 days, and it dropped to once about every 10 days when I lived in west berkeley.
I think I am going to exclude my trips to santa barbara for this, because the point of it is to drive way less in my day to day life, not deprive myself of traveling. then again, it might be fun to start thinking of other solutions in my trips (the train, carpooling, etc.)
- buying the TDI. I have yet to run it on full biofuel, but now that the warranty is up, I would like to. I do have some concern that it will (as the dealer says) “wreck my engine”, so need to do a bit more research. regardless, it gets great mileage. currently about 40 city and 44 highway.
- moving closer to the market and public transportation.
- fixing up my commuter bike. and using it, too! it is really fun to get a lot of errands done on the bike. IT TAKES SO MUCH LESS TIME! and is a lot more fun. bicycle boulevards really help.
- now I am close to BART and have a pass, so I don’t have to think about using it, or making sure I have dollar bills for the machine.
- living close to the trails and I can run straight from my house on some nice loops. much better neighborhood for this.
a couple of things that I am going to do…. - drive into work only once or twice a week (have to pick up laundry) and then group errands when I do drive in. it’s only 9 miles round-trip, so either way, it won’t kill me.
- drive like I don’t have brakes (slowly, with slow acceleration), I should be able to get my mileage up to 50.
- biggest challenges I foresee are when I start to do more running and want to go to mt. tam, diablo and pt. reyes. all far.
currently I get about 530 miles to the tank.
