The German philosopher Schopenhauer declared that mankind was doomed to vacillate eternally between suffering and boredom. Perhaps there is a grain of truth in this pessimist viewpoint, in so far as it applies to mankind as an ensemble. Now as an individual I have a choice, indeed a responsibility (ability to respond, see http://www.43things.com/people/progress/gochess/172304 ), to accept or refuse such a prescribed condition. I shall actively refuse by simply enjoying whatever I do. What I feel is important here is that enjoyment is an inner attitude which is independent of external circumstances. (This detachment is cultivated in part via zazen, see my other goal, http://www.43things.com/people/progress/gochess/99802 , and of course, optimism goes a long way towards happiness, http://www.43things.com/people/progress/gochess/138423 ).
