Nomads

Caught up now to the present day…

DateDistance (miles)Total (miles)Location
10/317.0127.5Passing along a dike and hedge, the former boundary of Cardolan.
11/303.0131.0Returned back to the Great East Road.
12/314.0135.0Celebrating New Years Eve in Bree at The Prancing Pony. Greeted Strider and other revelers as merriment and good wine is shared by all!
01/134.0139.0Leaving Bree and following the East Road again, meeting by chance the Mad Hatter and a couple of Magicians. However, after leaving them, it is strangely quiet along the way.
01/313.0142.0Leaving the road again heading North to Chetwood.
02/101.0143.0A day dream of towers reaching towards the sky fills my mind.
02/182.0145.0Still along the road as a strange day dreams of nomads and their caravans drift away.
02/211.0146.0We are still slugging along to Chetwood, dragging our feet.

Reaching the Barrow-downs

I did keep track of my walks in 2010, but didn’t make an entry until now. I still have quite a journey ahead.

DateDistance (miles)Total (miles)Location
12/196.247.2Cutting SE to Buckleberry Ferry after leaving Woody End. Riders seen yesterday.
12/211.348.5In Stock-brook and crossed the stream among the reeds.
12/241.550A light rain starts as we move into a belt of Oak and Elm trees.
12/303.053Still in the trees. Worried a bit after hearing the call of a black rider.
12/312.555.5Woods end and the land steadily becomes more tame. Sun is shining brightly.
01/011.557Reach area of the Marish with fields, meadows, hedges, gates, and drainage dikes.
01/075.062Passing Farmer Maggot’s fields..After a turnip field there is a stout gate to a rutted lane, edged by hedges.
04/117.269.2Passed Farmer Maggot’s house to the end of the lane. Ride in a wagon to the Ferry.
04/126.275.4Crossing the river in a ferry, then camping in Crickhollow for the night.
04/132.678We enter the tunnel under the Hedge to enter the Old Forest. We make it to the Bonfire Glade.
05/154.082On path in the Forest. Path gently climbs.
05/296.288.2We reach the top of the knoll in the forest. After resting, we leave the path heading North.
06/054.592.7Uneven land and hazy skies make us get lost for a while.
07/076.198.8Finding a river bank, we follow it to Old Man Willow that lulls us to sleep and danger. Rescued by Tom Bombadil.
08/086.2105After several days of rain, leave and climb up path to Barrow-downs No trees or water. Turn more east than we intend and enter the Barrow-downs.
08/126.0111Stop in a hollow atop a hill. Eat and fall asleep. Wake in fog, sun sinking.
09/152.5113.5We try to head north, but lose our way and become separated. Captured by Wights. Tom hears Frodo singing and rescues us once again.
09/207.0120.5We go north through a gap leaving the Barrow-downs and Tom behind.

Started my journey in the night

Walked 1 mile with my dog, quietly starting my journey to Rivendell. I reached the gate, and headed west. I don’t remember Hobbiton having so many security lights, but I did enjoy the luminescence of the solar lawn lights. The weather was cool, but not cold and a full moon was just rising in the east.

Thank you Calissa for giving me this goal.
