Budget Bike : Don’t Break the Piggy Bank
submitted by turbo_s
It’s a common misconception that getting into mountain
biking is expensive. Well, it can be, but not THAT
expensive. You don’t really need a P50K or P100K
top-of-the-line mountain bike to enjoy riding. Of
course, a P1,500, P3,000 or even an P8,000 bike from a
sports shop in your local mall is not gonna cut it. If
you’re going to take the sport seriously, you’ll need
a bike with quality parts that are built to last, at
least for a couple of years before you’ll want to
upgrade. Prepare to spend around P15K on your bike and
P3K on your gear and you’re good to go. Here’s a list
with approximate costs to build your budget bike:
Bike :
hardtail aluminum frame : from P1,700 to P3,500
(should come with seatpost and clamp)
headset : from P300 (non-sealed bearings) to P800
(sealed bearings)
stem : from P500 (generic, taiwan)
riser bars : from P250 (generic, taiwan)
suspension fork : from P1,500 (RST, elastomer) to
P4,000 (Manitou or RockShox, coil)
grips : from P200 (generic, taiwan)
seat : from P250 (generic, taiwan)
gruppo : P6,000 (shimano alivio – hubs, v-brakes,
shifters/levers, front & rear derailleurs, crank,
cables, 8 speed)
sprocket : from P750 (shimano, 8 speed)
rims : P1100/pair (Mavic 223)
spokes : from P300 (2 wheels, 72 spokes)
tires : from P700/pair (maxxis, wtb, tioga, kenda)
tubes : from P100/pair (shraeder, generic)
chain : from P500 (japan)
pedals : from P700 (platform, non-clipless)
Bike Sub-Total : from P14,850
Gear :
helmet : from P2,800++ (Bell, Giro) (If you have a
cheap head, get a cheap helmet. Don’t ride without
one.)
water bottle : P125 including cage
hydration pack : from P900
jersey : from P280
baggy shorts w/ chamois : from P500
gloves : from P350
Gear Sub-Total : from 2,925.00 (helmet and water
bottle)
Total : from 17,775
Visit bike shops before you buy. Half the fun is
canvassing, buying the parts, and building your bike.
Don’t forget to wear a helmet. One last tip: whatever
you do, DO NOT read a bike magazine. Why? Once you see
the new and latest parts, say goodbye to your bank
account. Believe me, the sky is the limit.
See you on the trail!
