Awake Cat

Seriously
Twenty two times
I have lifted you
Off the desk

Completely
Clueless cat
Draped across my
Ever increasing list

Honestly
Awaiting our awake
Mind to get a grip
You remind me

In honor of Emmy, Paige’s cat

6:15 AM

Sit
In the
Dark waiting
The sun behind
Cushion on the floor
Mind racing wild
Planning life
Stop to
Breathe

The Track

Circling around the bend
Passions rising
As we share
Our girls lives laid
Upon the tracks

Lapped in encouragement
Frustrations aired
as shoelaces flap
Answers sought

To the air ahead
Good for our hearts
our thighs sliding
We pour our days
Upon the track

For J & K

A Candle Lit

A candle lit
for new beginnings
and what that
might mean for you

New homes,
new babies,
new ideas,
and paths walked fresh each morning

A candle lit
with cautionary hopes and concerns
for people and planet

Victims,
violence,
earthquakes and floods,
and suffering experienced fresh each day

She Realized

Todays western-style senryu:

She realized reading
journals finished in past years
the sun keeps rising

Self Portrait

Stage 1

Chunky crayons griped tightly
skittering across the yellowing construction paper
red, green, blue lines
form uneven monsters on the page

Stage 2

Carefully sketched silhouettes
dance across the expensive bound book
tightly drawn without feeling
exposing little uncertainty

Stage 3

Photobooth popped open
capturing the raw morning aged and sleepy
carefully looking at the lens
in hope it captures my spirit

In honor of my daughters first poem assignment in her poetry writing course at Hendrix

Yesterday was Supposed to be Your Day

For all my talk
I am still rattled
by the little things

Beautiful Brahma

Lying in the corner
pillowed by fresh hay
I gave it up

It’s too hot
the pressure to lay an egg each day
the pecking by my brood

It isn’t as if I didn’t try
I am a first rate Brahma
beautiful in my white
regal feathers

Bred for Chinese royalty
so long ago
I grace this small
Ozark farm with my
commanding presence

My feathers filled the
air with boundless joy
molting during the summer heat

Raised from a chick
in this peasants land
sharing my royal spirit

This last August day
my heart was heavy
as I entered the coop
to sleep the eternal

In memory of our beloved Brahma chicken who died August 20, 2010

30 Poems in 30 Days - September 2010

I was supposed to write a poem each Tuesday this past year, but I wasn’t terribly faithful. So to give myself a push I am writing 30 poems in 30 days. Starting today. Please join me!
