i love my little Human Rights 101 course. it’s not challenging in any sense, i mean we’re covering the War on Terror for the final 5 weeks. nothing challenging there, really. i mean, unlike many typically in their late teen/early 20’s in the class, i have the age advantage – i remember the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and the entire unfolding of the events leading upto 9/11, as well as all those since.
I got 92.5% on my december exam.
I just handed in my 2nd paper – entitled
Human Rights Leaders of Today: Promoting Human Rights through Gender Equality and Access to Credit… hopefully it’s an A+ so I’m even closer to proving that I should be in a Master’s program :)
Wish me luck…

The topic I chose to write a short paper on included Howard Zinn, The Use and Abuse of History and the Role of Bias.
I got 82% (an A-)!!! Not bad… but for someone who is 33 and already has a degree etc…etc… I could have done better.
Truth be told, I was freaking over this paper. As I was saying to my husband, I can edit and write a 2000 page proposal, but write 7 pages of my OWN ideas and thoughts, for a GRADE. Ouch. It was tough to do, and I’m really happy I got a half decent grade.
One small step closer to a Masters but one large confidence booster. Yippee! :)

yah – 2 hours away on a campus just like the one i was going to, there was chaos as students suffered the aftermath of the Dawson College shooting spree. I was very aware that this event could easily unfold on any campus, and the increase in campus police was evident. super-charged was the way i felt.
gross.
BUT, even though it felt weird that I was attending my first class back on such a violent day in Canada, it was great to be back in class. i loved being back on campus, regardless of how old i am :)so, now I’m off to download the articles i need!
human rights 101 – now officially in progress!!

ok, for 1 class….
i’m so wound up about it now… i start on the 13th!!
Look out Human Rights 101… it should be entertaining. my hope is that i ACE my first 3 courses and then apply for a masters AND get some sort of PAID academic position… i’ve applied to a few postions at the university. it would be great to be back on campus full time and take classes as well. oh – and if you work for the university you get classes for FREE…
i hope the prof is good – he’s the program director as well.
i was also checking out the “rwanda initiative” ( http://rwandainitiative.ca/index2.html ) and this is the opening page…
_“Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication
has set up a multi-faceted exploration of the role of the news media in the Rwanda genocide. It aims to apply that knowledge in practical media training and journalism education in Canada and Rwanda.
The initiative is headed by Carleton journalism professor
Allan Thompson who organized an international symposium on the role of the news media in the genocide. He also set up a media and genocide archive and published a collection of related research papers. The latest phase of the Rwanda Initiative is a teaching partnership with the National University of Rwanda, in Butare._
SO YAH… tres excited about this; as a human rights student I have to weasle my way oon this project SOMEHOW… I can’t get onto campus soon enough…

I was recently accepted to go back to school and get another degree – this time Anthropology & Human Rights… I already have much of the Anthropology part covered off, just a few more courses and the Human Rights stuff and I’m ROCKIN!
YAY! Onward and Upward!
Ok, but how long is this thing going to take to complete?? Part-time makes for a long time…
But it’s a start!

I’ve officially applied to continue my education and obtain another degree – 5 credits away from a degree in human rights!
Hopefully I’ll be in school at least 1 night a week starting in the fall!

I’m awaiting an e-mail back from the co-ordinator of the program I am interested in registering in. Since I am only 5 full credits away from this second degree in Human Rights, I am no longer putting this off and looking to start 1 full-credit course in June. Just getting the wheels in motion feeld great, and I’m looking forward to actually registering and starting this!
