I can understand why people want to go somewhere and start again. There are a lot of things wrong with our society. The problem is, there always has been. Greed, hatred, pollution, starvation, materialism, these are nothing new.
Moving doesn’t change anything, and communes might help, but it’s tough to keep sealed off from everything. Going off and living in the bush sucks because it’s REALLY HARD, and sooner or later, you will need to be part of society again. Or dead. Or arrested.
Why not just be different right where you are? If you hate materialism, then learn to live on the bare minimum. If you want society to be kinder, then be kinder. Volunteer, help people. You can live in regular society and have a garden, can your food, recycle, be spiritual, what have you. Why not work towards being part of the change?
If you just hate everyone and hide, then how are you making anything better? If you hate T.v., then don’t watch it. If you hate all the crap being sold in Walmart, then learn to make stuff, or reuse things, or trade things.
As for spirituality, a truly spiritual person can sit on a bench downtown and meditate and find spirituality in everything around them.
You can be the escape from society right where you are.
