I forgot to mention how I’m going to do this! I am going to split my practice time up into periods spent practicing different aspects of playing, and I’m going to record how much time I spend practicing.
I’m also going to record my level of speed in each exercise every time I do it, and make a spreadsheet that will let me see a graph of my progress over time.
Lastly, I have a little book that I’m using to tally my total practice time so far, so I can see how far I’ve progressed towards the target of 10,000 hours of practice within the next few years.

Basically, I want to be a guitar virtuoso. Becoming a virtuoso on a musical instrument takes around 10,000 practice hours, studies have found. Well, let’s assume I don’t need quite that many because I have already been playing for a while and I’m not starting from square one.
In any case, what this means is that if I practice 4 hours a day, for a little less than 7 years, I will hit 10,000 hours total and will be a virtuoso. I plan to reduce this by upping the regime to maybe 6 hours a day when my hands can take it. I’d like to see if I can be a virtuoso in less than 5 years from now. Shit, Steve Vai used to practice for 10 hours a day!
At the moment I can’t do more than 2 hours without getting sore, so I’m working up to 4. When I’ve established that as a routine, I’ll consider this task complete!
