plant a tree

The tree has been planted. Without me. I haven’t been feeling very good and spent today (Thursday) in bed. My mom was off of work and decided to plant the tree today because it rained, making the ground softer and easier for digging and it was cooler outside that it has been lately. Unfortunately, that fell on the same day that I was sick in bed. :(

Too bad. I guess I still can’t check this goal off either. I am disappointed because I really wanted to plant the tree to honor my dog. Oh well. I guess I’ll have to plant another tree sometime…

By the way, we ended up getting a flowering crab apple tree like I mentioned in my last entry. We found one that had white flowers which was even more appropriate because my dog had white fur. So every time it blooms (and really, every time I look at it), I will be reminded of my dearly departed friend.

Until recently, my motivations for listing this goal have been mainly environmental. But on April 30, my dog of almost 16 years passed away, so I now am planning on doing this as a memorial to her. We aren’t completely sure what kind of tree we are going to plant yet but are leaning towards a flowering crab apple (pictured above). A big portion of our backyard is shady and our landscaping friend said that they do very well in semi-shade. They are smallish and flowering and my dog was a little “princess” type (she was a Maltese) so it seems appropriate. She was also crabby :D (in an endearing sort of way) making the name of the tree very appropos. Even better, it drops fruit onto the ground, which would be wonderful for our many backyard birds and wildlife (BTW, do squirrels eat crab apples?). But we still haven’t completely made up our mind yet.

Regardless of what kind of tree we plant, I think it will be a nice way to honor and remember her. She was very special.
