Portion Control

I’ve been reading some of Michael Pollan’s books, most recently Food Rules and I’m just starting on The Omnivore’s Dilemma. It really is enlightening how much processing and inorganic materials go into our food, and it stands to reason that the majority of it is unhealthy in today’s cost-cutting environment.

The rules that Pollan creates in Food Rules (sixty-four of them, to be exact) echo a plethora of wisdom passed down from grandmothers and great-grandmothers the world over, but they boil down to seven words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly vegetables.” I will be striving for this in the next weeks.

I’m starting work at an organic food supermarket, and a challenge given by one of the people at orientation was to try different lifestyles associated with eating healthy such as vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian, gluten-free etc. I think that is very cool, and I plan on doing one a month, probably starting in July, for at least a week apiece. It’ll be an interesting way to make sure I’m keeping my diet.

Anyway—my scale is broken for now, which is probably a good thing. When I get my first paycheck from my new job in a week I’m going to sign up for a gym membership and start going again (I went for a few weeks last month, but money is tight so far this month..). Wish me luck!

Currently I’m just under 300 lbs, down fifteen from two months ago. I want to reach 200 lbs, which is borderline overweight. To achieve this I will work out more, and I’m going to start riding my bike to work (about three miles one-way).

I will also start keeping track of what I’m eating using an online food log, and aim for around 2200 calories per day.
