My wife and I are Christians, yet we have such a hard time finding other Christians we identify with. We like and appreciate hymns as worship, but feel outcast at churches like that because we don’t look “normal”. Not to mention, I hate how everyone sings hymns in monotone voices as if they are completely bored by it. Have you ever looked at their faces? They aren’t worshipping their Lord, they’re (barely) singing because someone told them to turn to a number in a book! We also like more modern worship styles, but feel like too much of contemporary worship is generic or even theologically unsound. Plus, we find ourselves distanced from other young Christians who seem to push the boundaries a little too much for our comfort. I’m no prude…I like a beer every once in a while, I love punk rock and have for 15 years now…but some people are indistinguishable from non-Christians (and in some cases worse!) outside of begrudingly admitting they sort of believe in Jesus. Finally, if we do manage to find contemporary worship that we like, we end up disliking the pastor’s preaching style! Urgh. If only we could manage to find a church that is accepting of us, with inspiring worship and strong but open-minded believers and a great pastor. Indiana may not be a hotbed of unique church experiences, but there’s got to be one out there…
