This is an exciting goal. For a lot of us, it began as a long term goal, adopted last summer even before the 2008 Burning Man. Here it is, already January 2009. And although this year’s Burning Man is still 8 months away, the clock is ticking.
Speaking of tickets, Burning Man tickets go on sale in a few days. Here is a link to BM ticket information. If you are serious about attending Burning Man, or if you are still sitting on the fence, read this page now. It may save you some money now and grief later. Here are some highlights to pique your interest, but be sure to read it all at the source.
Important dates: Tickets for Burning Man 2009 go on sale Wednesday, January 14th, 2009, 10am (Pacific Standard Time). First postmark for mail order. NO mail orders will be processed if postmarked before 1/14/09. June 30, 2009: LAST POSTMARK FOR MAIL ORDER. NO MAIL ORDERS WILL BE PROCESSED IF POSTMARKED AFTER 6/30/09. August 28, 2009: Internet ticket sales end 12 midnight PST (Friday).
Reminder for 2009: once again there will be NO ticket sales at the event gate! You must purchase your tickets before arriving.
Prices:
9,000 tickets will be available for $210 each, while supplies last. Limit 2 tix per person, Internet orders only.
9,000 tickets will be available for $240 each, while supplies last.
Limit 2 tix per person, available through Internet or mail order.
9,000 tickets will be available for $260 each, while supplies last.
Apparently no limit per person, available through Internet or mail order.
9,000 tickets will be available for $280 each, while supplies last. Apparently no limit per person, available through Internet or mail order, and possibly through walk-in outlets after March 1, 2009.
An unknown number of tickets are $300, while supplies last. Apparently no limit per person, available through Internet or mail order, and through walk-in outlets after March 1, 2009.
Finally, there are 2500 tickets available for $160. These tickets are reserved for lower income participants. Burning Man ask that you please apply for this lower priced ticket only if you truly need one. These tickets are available from 1/26/09 through 5/30/09 or while supplies last. A link to the Low Income Ticket Application will be posted here in January. Check back. Applications sent before or after those dates will NOT be accepted. PLEASE DO NOT FEDEX OR OVERNIGHT YOUR APPLICATION! If you can afford to overnight your application you should purchase your ticket at a higher price level. Needless to say, you run a risk of missing out on the $210 tix if you apply for a $160 ticket and your application is rejected. I don’t know what the application looks like, but it stands to reason they will want some sort of income statement for eligibility.
For an event that is fairly wide open, there are some stringent rules about ordering and paying for tickets. Be sure to read all information on the Burning Man ticket page!
Most of us here have never been to Burning Man. To get an idea of what Burning Man is, go here. They even publish a first-timers’ guide which contains a lot of invaluable information. The event survival guide is required reading.
Some of us here on 43T are interested in camping together, and possibly forming a theme camp. Here’s an explanation of what a theme camp is. Having a registered theme camp has the advantage of knowing in advance where the camp will be placed within Black Rock City. To do so, we will have to submit a Placement Questionnaire. The period for submitting the questionnaire begins Feb. 15 and ends May 31. The sooner we know the approx. size of our camp, and its theme, the sooner we can submit the questionnaire, and hopefully get a better camp site than those who wait until the last minute.
So, this is a plea for a discussion. Do we want a theme camp? What can we offer to the Black Rock City community? What do YOU want from your Burning Man experience? How can we all come together to make that happen?
And art! Burning Man is so much about art. Art on a grand scale. Does anyone have an interest in creating a piece of art to display at Burning Man? As part of the theme camp, or as a stand-alone project? Individual artist or group art project?
Now’s the time to get the ball rolling. Now’s the time to participate, to plan, MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

Let’s hear some! The Art Theme for Burning Man 2009 is Evolution. What form do we want our 43T Theme Camp to take?

The Burning Man organizers have announced the art theme for Burning Man 2009!
Our theme this year prompts three related questions: What are we as human beings, where have we come from, and how may we adapt to meet an ever-changing world?
Following Ms. MacAran’s lead, let’s begin thinking of our presence at Burning Man 2009. How may we incorporate our 43T ethos into the event’s overarching theme of evolution?

...and its effect on your plans. Specifically, logistics…
A few people have expressed concerns about transportation to the Burning Man site, and about having to pack and transport shelter and enough water and food to last a week in the desert. At this point, it’s way too early to make specific plans, but I think we can address generalities.
First, regarding transportation, take a look at the discussion here. The bottom line is, if you can get close, we can manage to get you the rest of the way.
Next, regarding shelter. If we camp together and create a theme camp, we can pool resources and get a large tarp for shade. Perhaps more tarps and/or several straw bales for walls to break the wind and provide a modicum of privacy. Or something else entirely. The point is, by pooling resources to get community items, the people who are arriving by air need not worry about packing more things than they can realistically manage.
The same concept applies to food and water. So, how do we get the community items to the desert? Some of us will be driving to BM. I will be driving either my pickup truck or a rental truck with larger capacity. Perhaps others can help in that regard.
But the entire reason to bring up this now is so that people will not conclude that they cannot participate because of logistics difficulties. If you want to attend, and can manage it financially, everything else is details. We can work out the details.

It appears Burning Man tickets will go on sale in January. Tickets cost from approx. $210 (all prices in US dollars; our international team members can take advantage of the weak US dollar) to approx $300. There is no difference between the least expensive ticket and the most expensive ticket, other than the amount you pay. Obviously, the lower priced tickets sell out first. The price structure rewards early purchasers.
For some, the price of tickets may seem daunting. But we have about 5 months to manage our respective finances to have the money on hand in January, to get event tickets at an advantageous rate. If you begin Sept. 1st and set aside $2 per day, come January you should have enough to buy a ticket. Burning Man limits ticket sales to two per purchase. There is no discount for groups. You must purchase your tickets in advance. You cannot arrive at the event and expect to buy admission at the gate. They don’t do that.
