The boy outshoots the old man  — 2 years ago

My youngest son came over the other day, so I broke out the six gun and the shotgun, neither of which he had ever fired before. He immediately proceeded to outshoot me. It was as if those guns were natural extensions of his body. I was amazed.

He went home with a good sized bruise on his shoulder after firing that double-barrelled beast 20-some times. That’ll teach him to outshine the old man.

Found a coachgun! Woo hoo! (a coachgun is a side by side, double-barrelled shotgun…it’s the one you typically see in the movies, carried by the guy “riding shotgun” on a stagecoach). I get to pick it up on 5/10/06 (damned waiting period…)

Seemed like every couple of weeks there were ads in the newspaper for reasonably priced coachguns and Winchester rifles. Until I got a little “extra” money. (Hah! what a concept! Extra money.) And now? Not only can I not find sale prices on these guns, I can’t find the guns at all! Damn you, Big 5 Sporting Goods, mock me not, I say!

Ok! I have the revolver, a Colt .45 replica from Uberti (the Cattleman) and I’m getting where I can get 4 inch groups at about 15 yards. I need another revolver if I’m going to compete, but I haven’t decided whether to get another cartridge gun or get a cap and ball outfit, like an 1851 Colt Navy or 1858 Remington. I may get the shotgun this weekend, I’m looking for a double-barrelled, side by side, with exposed hammers, in 12 gauge. If the bonus I’m expecting at work is big enough, I may also pick up a Winchester rifle in .45 Colt. Yippe kai yai yeay!~

Cowboy action shooting  — 2 years ago

There are thousands of people who, like me, refused to grow up and who still like playing “cowboys.” Men and women dressing up in period costume, and shooting single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and shotguns. Ok, yes, it’s expensive to invest in the firearms and the costume and other accoutrements that make up a personna, but so are cruises to the south seas or trips to Europe or jet skis or whatever else appeals to one as recreation.
