In case this looks like I’m planning to go marching into the woods with a Bobcat and a chainsaw to gouge deep tracks through pristine wilderness, I thought I’d add a disclaimer.
The areas I’m talking about are criss-crossed with old logging roads, meandering singletrack and deer/cow paths. “Building” trail is really more like connecting up existing trails and rerouting the occasional unsustainable section (mostly created by dirt-bikes and ATVs creating incredibly stupid rutted lines straight up slopes).

This is a sub-goal of my desire to build a trail network around my town. There are lots of places to hike and bike, but I need to focus on creating one great trail.
I’ve identified my target. The municipal council has created a new park on Conkle Mountain as part of next year’s centennial celebrations, and there’s great potential for a wonderful loop to the top and back.
This panoramic photo (slow load) gives a nice view from near the top—I’ll need this for inspiration while there’s still snow on the ground.
