in honor of the holidays and the lovely Brits i recommend all of you watch Love Actually
“no, i’m Collin – God of Sex”
the use of ‘fancy’ as americans we don’t use it often and when it is used it’s usually in a playful manner to describe someone or thing that is all dressed up/made up/prettied up. But i love that the british use it way more often like ‘tidy’ and ‘proper’
ok so i haven’t really picked anymore up recently but can i just say how much i like saying buggar? it’s such a fun word. thats all lol.
ok random one… i picked up hob, meaning the stove. or thats what i gather cause she was talking about cooking, stuff in the oven and stuff in pots and pans bubbling on the hob.
thats a fun one i like saying it…
i’ve noticed that they also use words often that we use but only as or about a child… and actually i would say after that almost never. they say things like wobbly, tidy, and proper.
instead of a child having a loose tooth, they would say they have a wobbly tooth. they use tidy in conjunction with clean, ya know the bathroom looks all clean and tidy. And i don’t remember the last time i heard someone use the word proper but i like this word, put something in it’s proper place or don’t do that it’s not proper. but i think americans think of the word proper as a snobby word.
i know there are british people floating around here so someone tell me what ‘snog’ is i think i have an idea but i’m really not clear on it.
ok here are the few i’ve picked up so far…
have a row – have a fight/argument
piss off – go away
get pissed – wasted/drunk (piss drunk)
buggard up – messed up
and i think everyone knows what shag means, thanks to austin powers
ok so i was reading this book and i thought it was funny and sort of cute the little bits that are obviously british because you would never hear that come out of an americans mouth, or you wouldn’t hear it in that context… such as fag, british slang: cigarette, english slang: derogatory term for homosexual.
so i have picked up only a few terms… but i would love to pick up more. yeah so i’m weird…
