Hyperion; The Stars My Destination

About 35% of Hyperion blew my mind. The rest of it was not well written, and the end was so unsatisfying that I had to immediately read the sequel. Still not satisfied, I gave up on the series. (There are 2 more books.)

The Stars My Destination is not as good as Bester’s other great work, The Demolished Man, but is still a fun story full of really intriguing ideas.

Rendevous With Rama

My third Clarke book to read, and my first to thoroughly enjoy. It managed to maintain its tension and mystery up until the very last chapter. I recommend it to anyone who considers himself a sci-fi connesu… coness… fan.

Untitled

I’ve been updating my “read 50 books this year” list and forgetting to update this one. I think since my last update I’ve finished:

Foundation
Fahrenheit 451
The Forever War

Earth Abides

This book was a little slow, but I think that was deliberate – after all, something like 99% of the population gets killed in the first seven pages. I really liked it – gave me much to think about. Especially when you remember that it was written in 1949.

The Demolished Man

Fun but familiar (as it’s been copied so many times). If I’d read it when it first came out and there was nothing else like it, man, it would have blown my mind!

A Canticle for Leibowitz

Why didn’t anyone tell me about this book sooner? It is a masterpiece!

The Man in the High Castle

I fail to see the genius, frankly.

Brave New World

I would rate this one “definitely worth reading.”

I, Robot

Only 83 to go, I think…

Starship Troopers

It was really interesting to see how the character was changed by being in the army and fighting in a war… especially as I have no military experience and there is a war going on. I haven’t seen the movie, but now I have to watch it – I just don’t see how this could become a GOOD movie. There’s just not enough plot.
