begun in a tent by lantern light on a vacation filled with intense friendships and lots of beer. Not the best setting for beginning a book with 2 forwards and an introduction, but a memorable one. So far I’ve read a lot of biography of James which was an education in itself, but not much of James’s own words. More to come.

Penguin classics that is. “The Ambassadors” and “The Portrait of a Lady.” I know these are the most popular of James’s work but figured I ought to start somewhere. I have a full schedule of reading ahead as I’ve got Michael Cunningham’s “Specimen Days” waiting as well.
