Hitchcock: C-

I saw this on a plane and forgot I saw it almost immediately. Nuff said.

Les Mis: B

I didn’t want to see this film because I love the story and didn’t want to see it anywhere but the theater. I also dislike Anne Hathaway. However – when she sang I Dreamed A Dream, I actually got tears in my eyes (and I DON”T cry at movies). I only watched half the film but it was actually good (she said, begrudgingly). [Plane]

Crazy Stupid Love: B+

I saw this on a plane and laughed out loud lots of times. I didn’t expect anything from this Ryan Gosling + Steve Correll + Julianne Moore + Emma Stone film but it was fun-ny!

Renoir: C

This biopic was so beautiful and so boring! The film told the story of Renoir when he was in his 70s, his sons were off at war and he’d found a new muse. The play of light in each scene was just beautiful but, after a while, I was left wondering how many hours had passed and how many more I’d have to endure. [Charles]

Paul: B

I would have never watched this movie on my own but it was actually cute and charming. Paul is an alien (voiced by Seth Rogan) who hooks up with 2 alien-obsessed geeks from England and they all have an adventure. Loads of stars and many, many alien movie references (probably more than I know since it’s not really my genre). It was an enjoyable movie and I’m glad Fran made me watch it! [DVD]

Dhobi Ghat: A-

Ever since I visited India a few years ago, I love Indian movies (especially non-Bollywood movies). This was a touching film of interwoven stories with Aamir Khan, an actor I now adore. [Netflix]

This is 40: D-

I loved Knocked Up and was not expecting this to be a continuation of that film. This movie sucked. None of the characters were likable, the story didn’t go anywhere (there actually wasn’t much of story), it wasn’t funny, and, at the end, I felt like WTH?! [on demand]

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: A

I have wanted to see this movie for a while and I wasn’t disappointed. Emma Watson and Ezra Miller were really good. The story was interesting and I liked the way it unfolded very slowly and you were getting details up until the very end. My only complaint is that the high school misfits are rarely THAT cool. [on demand]

Quartet: B-

I wanted to love it – I tried to love it – but I didn’t love it. I loved the cast, the scenery and the message but I thought the story fell flat. Sad to say… [Charles]

DWFF-2013

The King is Dead: B – dark Australian comedy
Zero Dark Thirty: C – didn’t think it was anything new; liked Homeland better
Nate and Margaret: B – like Harold and Maude but not as creepy
The Master: C- – confusing and uninspiring
Searching for Sugarman: A+ – incredible story; wouldn’t believe if it were a movie (not a documentary)
Heathers: B- – revisiting a dark blast from the past
Silver Linings Playbook: B – saw it before but liked it again
The Sessions: B – didn’t think I’d like this film about a disabled guy’s quest for sex
Argo: B – saw it before but liked it again
