I see that many of us listed her, but I still wanted include her in my own list. Growing up in the 1980s, she was the ultimate example of compassion. When she died, I was saddened that Princess Di got so much more media attention. Now, I realize her example of humility, devotion, and service was beyond anything the press could say and will continue to effect others.

1. Maria Montessori

One of my personal heroes, Maria was the first female physician in Italy. She was assigned to care for poor children with disabilities. Her teaching methods for these kids was so effective, it is still continued today (Although, sadly, families often need to be well-off in the United States in order to afford a school ascribing to her methods.)
She also lived to be 82 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 3 times.
