A little tip goes a long way

By the way, if you’re thinking of doing this yourself but feel that you “don’t have the time” remember that all it takes is 10 minutes twice a day. I play all the tunes I know in the morning before going to work and again in the evening after supper. Sure, I play around on the weekend and practice more and learn new tunes but even the two short practices a day on weekdays should be enough to get you somewhere useful within the first 6-8 weeks.

One caveat is that I played recorder for two years when I was about 8; this may account for my rapid advancement and shallow learning curve. Nevertheless, studies have shown that many repeated short learning sessions is better than trying to spend a single multi-hour block studying.

Moving on

Now that I’ve learned my first 10 tunes I’m moving on to the next part of this goal and learning 15 more to make 25 tunes on the tinwhistle

Qualifying a vague goal

To further qualify this goal, let’s say that for me “learning to play the tinwhistle” means:

  1. being able to play enough tunes to play two hour-long sets without repeating more than 50% of the tunes;
  2. the ability to learn any new simple (ceol mor) tune “on the spot”

I can currently do both of these on the guitar so I think this is a very achievable goal.

If you agree, join me and start by learning 10 tunes on the tinwhistle.
