I picked up a pattern on the weekend – a real pattern, for a cute, summery dress I’ll actually wear. (As opposed to all the patterns I buy for gorgeous gowns and costumes that I keep meaning to make, but never get around to, and have no reason to wear in any case.) I haven’t bought fabric yet, but I think I have it picked out. I just have to decide on a colour.

It didn’t really occur to me until recently how little I’ve been sewing the past couple of years. I used to do it all the time—I spent years on an ancient machine (the thirty-year warranty had expired at least ten years before I inherited it), creating all sorts of wonderful things. For a long time, most of my wardrobe was made up of things I’d designed myself.

I got a new machine about five years ago, and I still haven’t really explored it much—I hem pants with it, maybe customize a t-shirt on occasion, but that’s about it. (I did both yesterday, which is probably why I’m thinking about this today.)

I need to get back into it.
