prevent carie

Good start  — 5 months ago

Okay so I ate more sweets, BUT… I brushed after each and every meal! And I didn’t snack at all between meals :) I kept my teeth brushed at all times, except for those when I was actually chewing.

Sugar...  — 5 months ago

... is such a nice word to say.

Self-sabotage  — 5 months ago

I ate sugar, already.

We had some lime pie leftovers, and some orange financiers. And soda.

Bad, bad carie-fighting person! But I did brush thoroughly right afterwards.

I guess we were saying our goodbyes. Sugar and me.

So, this time for real, I’m starting right now a sugar-free week.

No more cavities  — 5 months ago

Here’s what Wikipedia says:

For dental health, the frequency of sugar intake is more important than the amount of sugar consumed. In the presence of sugar and other carbohydrates, bacteria in the mouth produce acids which can demineralize enamel, dentin, and cementum. The more frequently teeth are exposed to this environment, the more likely dental caries are to occur. Therefore, minimizing snacking is recommended, since snacking creates a continual supply of nutrition for acid-creating bacteria in the mouth. Also, chewy and sticky foods (such as dried fruit or candy) tend to adhere to teeth longer, and consequently are best eaten as part of a meal.

So I guess it’s good to have very well defined meal times. And, of course, brush after each and every one of them. Maybe I should change this goal to “no more cavities” or something.

No sugar added for a week  — 5 months ago

Starting right now, I must be able to go a whole week without eating sugary foods. Of course it’s impossible to avoid sugar altogether, but I will not eat foods that have sugar added for an entire week.

Surprise!  — 5 months ago

Despite my daily flossing and teeth-brushing, my dentist found carie in two of my teeth.

She said they don’t seem like the type of carie from lack of dental hygiene, and that it looks like I’m taking good care of my teeth. This type of carie is most likely caused by the intake of sugar. Soda, candy and sweets in general, she said.

Well, that’s it. I need to eat less sugar. I don’t want to have any more cavities. Not to mention diabetes runs in my family. And I AM trying to lose 6 kilos (about 13 lbs)...
