So it was friday!! The day every college student looks forward to and I’d already made plans to hit the grocery store, pick up a few things and rest for the remainder the day. Then I get a text message from a friend in my spanish class asking me to hang out with her and her friends at busboys and poets. The offer sounded irresistible. A night out in downtown DC!! I was excited. Until I remembered I’d already made plans….with myself!! I could always go grocery shopping another time…So, I texted her for the details and she told me to bring friends. I felt relieved because we were just spanish-buddies, and I didnt know her friends. So I texted six of my friends asking them to ‘join the fun’. They all responded but only one could come. Well, one’s wonderful and at least I’d have a familiar face just in case her friends were total snobs.
So, I excitedly got dressed and headed to the meet-up area. As my friend and I headed over to the group I spotted her friends. Twas a pretty big group and I began to feel queasy but I reminded myself that this was what I wanted….this was being more sociable. Well, we walked over and quickly introduced ourselves and I quickly posted myself at my friend’s side. Then this girl began talking to the friend I brought with me. n I got stuck with my friend from spanish class.
To cut a long story short…the event was fun. Even though we didnt mix and mingle with the entire group for the remainder of the night. My friend made sure us ‘newbies’ were comfortable and happy. I realized that she was a very outgoing person and I studied how she just struck up a conversation and got the whole group laughing. Besides, there were other kids there who were not her friends, but friends of her friends….so she didnt know everybody! Yet she was at ease and her way of keeping a conversation going was just by asking questions(consistently) and cracking jokes and just being pleasant! I learnt a lot. In a different situation she’d have just been plain annoying if you ask me but when everyone wanted the tension out of the air, and was afraid to make the first move…she was our saviour! I made new friends I socialized and that night I went home feeling very content!
