I am marking this goal as finished because I now give to charity on a regular basis via monthly direct debit, as well as making one-off donations when I get chance. I think that it’s important for me to keep giving to charities that I believe in, and I intend to do so.

I was in Liverpool today shopping and there were a number of people with little cash buckets and stickers collecting for Cancer Research. I admired their commitment because it was absolutely freezing. One guy was in some kind of fancy dress outfit (possibly trying to look like a Beatle?) and he looked so cold and wet, I felt quite sorry for him. I handed over some cash, and felt a bit guilty then for all the times that I have walked past people collecting for worthy causes. Still, I suppose the important thing is that I’m making more of an effort on this now.
I took my saved up coins to my local supermarket so that I could change them for cash in the coinstar machine. I noticed for the first time that the machine has an option to donate the money to charity, so I did this instead of getting the cash back. My savings added up to about £5 which went to the Red Cross, and I was pleased to find an unexpected opportuinity to give something to a charity that I think well of.
Today I figured out how to make monthly donations to charity via payroll, and I’ve sent off a form to our pay people to set this up.
A colleague announced in work today that they plan to run a marathon for charity in May. Nornally I would have donated just a pound or so, but I was conscious that this was the first chance of doing anything for this particular thing so I promised him a tenner. I still haven’t actually given anything to charity yet, but he’s run marathons before so I fully expect to have to pay up when the time comes. (I just hope I’m still in a charitable mood then!)
