I discovered this little gem of a site (ok, massive GEM—they just gave me a 60GB iPod!!!!) called Ning (http://www.ning.com). Ning allows you to clone simple social apps (e.g., Groups, Hot or Not things, photo sharing, group blogs, etc.) for your own use. It’s pretty darn cool (even without the iPod-a-day giveaway).
Anyway, I had this brainstorm about harnessing the power of the internets to produce a collective movie. I started a group app (http://letsmakeamovie.ning.com) to get it going. My next plan is to clone an app for submitting story pitches, which will then be voted on by all the group members. And then, we’ll move on to submitting and voting on other moviemaking tasks. The other feature will be that members will accrue producer points (based on submitting ideas, voting, volunteering for production pieces, donating money, etc.). Those points will determine the number of “shares” that each member “owns” for the final movie (and what sort of “Producer” title they’ll receive in the credits).
It’s not a completely formed idea yet, but I’m hoping I can attract some members to help shape its future.
