I ended up committing to an OU course which helped so much.
Next winter I might carry on learning more but now with the light evenings I want my social life back.

Yipee! I finished my Open university course TT280 3 years ago

Thanks for everyone who gave me advise and held my hand. I took everyone’s advise in January and committed myself to doing the Open University short course about Basic Web Design.

Talk about cutting it fine, I got the final version of the final assignment in with an 1 hour to spare.

Boy did I learn loads…. but boy did it take me a long time.

For those interested in these things, I made a really classic bad design decisions for the final assignment, I decided to do the whole web site using only cascading style sheets to fix the page layout and then realised that I had know idea how a CSS worked DOH.

When I submitted the pages for validation I got something like 80 errors, needless to say many frustrating hours were lost fixing the bloody things. Had to call for help in the end and Neil fix my errors in wait for 45 minutes!!!!! How did he do that? Anyway it’s all in now and I can get my life back. Might even write my journal again. I’ve missed everyone’s entries.

Do I regret doing it absolutely not. Learnt loads of html and css techniques and actually now have a real respect for all the great techies I’ve met who work with this kind of code all day, they are so methodical something I’m just not.

Do I want to be a web master NO NO NO but then I knew that before.

Did I enjoy the OU experience On the whole yes. I did get frustrated when the moderators wouldn’t give a straight answer because “it might help your final assignment” but I think I’m hooked. Neil found me looking at the brochure the other night and I had to tell him I might sign up for a course in October on Practical Thinking. Its all about how we use metaphors and analogies to understand complex and confusing situations.
