talk to strangers, all the time

Yesterday I was leaving my house and the shopping center behind it had a man hanging xmas garland in a t-shirt and shorts (it was 80 degrees). I had a feature assignment to do and I thought that would make a great photo. So I turned around and went back to snap some photos. The guy happens to be married to a lady who owns a jewelry store (i make jewelry) and they seemed genuinely happy that I stopped, took an interest, and talked with them. I got great photos and met some interesting people. Journalism is a great way to meet the local folk.

I do this at times and am usually amazed at how responsive people are. At the root, people want to be seen and feel connected to those around them. So when you’re standing in line for coffee or for the toilet at Headbanger’s Ball, this is an excellent thing to remember. You just might brighten someone’s day.
