Today marks the day where the allied forces began the Invasion of Normandy to take mainland Europe back from Nazi control in 1944. World War II was one of the times in history where I believe that war was a necessity. Adolf Hitler was gaining control of Europe. Many people went into hiding out of fear of being sent to internment camps or, even worse, becoming a casualty of the holocaust.
My grandfather served in World War II, where he was awarded the purple heart. We have the piece of shrapnel that was removed from his body after surgery. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that the brave soldiers made so that the people of the Earth could remain free.
The United Nations was formed after the war, as an effort to make sure that nothing as terrible as that ever happened to the planet again. For as many problems as the Earth and it’s people are suffering with right now, I have no doubt that without the efforts of the Allied troops in World War II, we would all be in much worse shape.
