I have been seriously considering doing this recently. Ive been looking at the cost of boats, and the cost of slip rental, and the benefits provided at most slips, and its like ‘whoa, i can live on the waterfront in Key West for $400 bucks a month!?’. And when you get tired of one place, just look for a new slip in a different place, freight all of your non-seaworthy possessions to it, and set sail.
No land tax, no mortgage… just you and the world, and whatever trade you would like to have really. Its dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things, and as even the dockage in large cities is cheap, once you do drop your anchor and moor off, you are close to so much stuff to do, and so many opportunities for employment. That almost seems like it pays for the lifestyle. Just an initial investment in a decent livable boat, boating equipment, registration, operator classes, and you are good to go.
Free food right off your back porch. The option to be somewhere else when your wanderlust takes over. I’m in love with this idea. I’ve always wanted to be a gypsy, but a sea rat seems more doable.
