Election '08
The Tennessee Republican Party launched an attack on Michelle Obama recently. I hope the people aren’t going to tolerate these distractions from the issues much longer. It seems like the past 2 presidential elections were turned into a referendum on how much you love america or how much you hate gays.
I think we can all agree that nobody had as much of a raging “I love America” hard-on than Bush-Cheney, but nobody has done more to hurt this country that those two.
How about we make this next election about the issues? Not the guy you wanna have a beer with or the person with the most qualified minister.
We can hope, but so far, it still looks like the usual old games.

I love it when Stephen Colbert asks “Iraq: the great war or the greatest war?”
Well folks, we are well over 3 years into this war so I’d just like to take a look at our objectives going into Iraq and how we’ve tracked against those:
1. Weapons of Mass Descruction: Umm… well, we all know how that one ended up. Let me ask you this question… if you really thought a country HAD weapons of mass descruction, would you invade them? I guess you could argue that we thought they had the capability to create them, but that would indicate they were not an immediate threat.
2. Iraq as a model for democracy in the middle east: Well, it’s certainly a model for something. Maybe Cuba will wanna use our Iraq model if, jah willing, Castro kicks the bucket.
3. Saddam is a murderous dictator: Yes, he was and now he’s in custody, standing trial. Maybe in the next year or 2, he’ll be sentenced and serve a life in prison.
4. Democracy will spread throughout the middle east: Yes, maybe in 5 to 10 years, when we’re out of there people will look back and say “Wow, that looked easy, I want that”.
5. Oil reserves in stable hands: Well, they’re not stable yet, but even when they are, gas will still cost $4/gal. What if some of the money from Iraq had been diverted into funding alternative fuel options? That might have been a little too progressive.
Were there any other reasons I’m forgetting? Does anyone still think that this war was a good decision?

Why are we bombarded with news about flag burning, immigration, and gay marriage? Is this really where the focus of the US should be right now?
Isn’t there a war we need to end? A social security program that is set for failure very soon? Aren’t we at a tipping point with the environment?
This administration is as bad for the US as it is for the world. Can we really wait 2 more years?

I almost choked when I read this statement in my WSJ this morning. This statement seems so contrary to everything this country was founded on. Certainly terrorism is nothing to ignore, but I cannot believe this administration is still cramming the same shitty fear statements down our throat.
Write your representatives, let them know your stance.

Ok, I remember hearing about the Domino Theory in school as one of the reasons we went into Vietnam. The Domino Theory was that if one nation in Southeast Asia (Vietnam) fell to communism, that all would fall one-by-one. This theory was proven false when Vietnam fell and most of Asia remained status quo.
Am I hearing a new Domino Theory from the Bush administration? If Iraq becomes free, freedom will spread one-by-one to countries throughout the Middle East.
