big day out 2008 — 5 months ago
ok, I marked this as not worth it because of a number of reasons.
1. I never really wanted to go in the first place, the night before I was seriously thinking of selling my ticket because there were heaps of people that wanted to go that didn’t have tickets at the party I was at.
2. We went to a party the night before and only got a few hours of sleep and my friend was hungover and we were both very tired.
3. My dad took ages to get his arse into gear and drive us down. I wanted to leave at 9.00 am, we ended up leaving about 9.30 or later. Then there was a huge pile-up on the highway because of a car crash. In other words, we were late.
4. I missed one of the few bands I actually wanted to see, Something With Numbers, who started at 11.00. We were still stuck in traffic at 11.
5. On the way in, we had to jump a fence, and because I’m short it was kinda difficutl. I hit my knee really really hard and it got cut, bruised badly and swelled up and hurt for the rest of the day. I couldn’t walk or sit properly, let alone mosh, which made everything very uncomfortable and painful.
Luckily, we managed to reach British India in time (though they’d already started) and pushed our way into the crowd. This was the best part of the day I reckon.
After British India, Elise watched Josh Pyke but I was starting to suffocate in the pit (again, cause i’m short I find mosh pits very hard to handle. especially if theres someone really big and tall standing right in front of me, I feel claustrophobic and i can’t breathe properly cause I’m not tall enough to reach the fresh air. if it’s crazy, i also get knocked around a lot). so i went outside and waited.
After Josh Pyke we got some lunch. I was starving and bought a tiny bucket of chips for $4. they didn’t do much and i was still hungry after. i also bought a coke for $3.50. what a rip off. Elise didn’t want to do anything except lie around because she was hungover and decided to go to sleep.
Later on, we saw the end of Regurgitator, then Hilltop Hoods for Elise, Grinspoon, Arcade Fire, and finally Silverchair. We watched all of these from a hill overlooking the crowds and the stages. We couldn’t really see what was going on on the stages since we were far away, but there was a screen in front of us which we could watch.
All in all, I just didn’t have a good time. I was feeling slightly sick from being so tired and my knee hurting so much and we were sitting down most of the time. I think i would have had a much better time if I hadn’t hurt my knee or been to the party the night before, but i certainly don’t regret going to the party.
I think I would go again, but I’d be more organised. I’d try and get there earlier. I’d make sure I wouldn’t miss any bands. I’d make sure there were more bands i’d want to see. I guess it all wasn’t a waste because it was a learning experience and i’ll know what to expect next year if i go.
