I’ve done this. Restaurant at the End of the Universe is not as good – but it’s good enough.

does the film just cover the first book?
and
it’s very frustrating to be re-reading chunks of the first book in the Restaurant. Maybe i notice it more coz I just come from readng the first book and don’t need reminding what the story is so far and what the HG2G is.
I couldn’t tear my eyes away for a full 5 or 6 chapters. It was 1am by the time I decided enough was enough.
Zaphod finally met Zarniwoop.
The best bit was Marvin against the Frogstar Scout Robot Class D. There were hints of the original glorious comedy in that section.
The trapped passengers waiting for 900 years and being fed coffee and biscuits was pretty gruesome though.
it seems a little odd – not that HG2G wasn’t odd – but this part is VERY ODD – it’s not making me laugh as much.
Is this normal? Maybe I was expecting too much after reading HG2G.
Beeblebroxs’ great-grandfather for petes sakes?? Where on Earth (scuse the pun) did that possibility come from? Oh dear – how improbable such an event would be – that’s probably why it happened, especially on their high-improbability drive ship.
and I started the first chapter of The Restaurant…
I couldn’t believe it when I turned the page and saw that I’d read the first book!!! Certainly wasn’t expecting that!
I didn’t think that the Magrathea adventure was the main event in the story so I was expecting the first part to go on for longer than what it did.
I’m not disappointed with the book in anyway though! I just wished it carried on for longer!
Anyway, I shall be reading another chapter of the Restaurant tonight so I’ll see how it goes from there!
They are now on Magrathea and Arthur has been swiped by the old man and his spaceship.
It’s amazing how much the book has made me laugh. The humour, the sarcasm – it’s just so clever. I have to read over certain passages repeatedly just because I love how clever it is written.
It struck me that the book is timeless although it was written as a radio series (?) back in 1978/9 (?)
It’s a story that will never grow old. It’s fantastic. The wait was worth it.
I love the smarmy opening and closing doors!!! Objects that we don’t even think about have been given the most ridiculous characters!!!
I also love that depressed robot. It’s bloody great!
I love the job description for Galactic President.
Just brilliant.
It’s such a good book I don’t want it to end. I notice I’m about half-way through the first book already though! It’s taken about two weeks to read this far (approximating a chapter per night before bed!)
Reminded me of sitting in the cinema watching a film once. My exact words were “This film is so good I don’t want it to end!”.
Wish I could remember which film that was!!
YEEHAHA!!!
I found it on my travels last weekend at the WH Smiths branch in Yeovil, Somerset.
Boy was I pleased! It has all 4 books in one! So I get to read the whole lot in one go!
I am reading The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James too. I started this about two weeks ago. I have been reading one chapter a night.
My plan is to alternate readings of each!
So far, I have read up to the point where Earth is blasted!!! I have found the book to be extremely comical – it is certainly one of the only books I have read that makes me chuckle loudly. I quite understand what people were talking about when they said that the book is hard to put down once you get into it.
I got into it pretty much from the first sentence!
Last night was tough, I knew I was tired but I was aghast at the Yellow Somethings hollering their Jobsworth speak at the helpless Earthlings!
Excellent irony (is that the right term?). Excellent story so far.
I pick up my copy as though it’s gold-dust!! HAHA
I’m reading so many other books at the moment – this may take a little while.
I’m going to have to buy it cheap over the Net – coz I really can’t find the book anywhere else – how ridiculous!!
