May 2013
Android
May.01Installed SpeakToIt Assistant. Performance-wise, it’s having problems on my phone, but it’s one of the first voice assistants which is able to access my Google calendar.

PC
May.01Copying S’s from Sherlock to Starsky and Hutch (42.9GB) at 10.20am
May.03Copying S’s from Starsky and Hutch (23GB) at 1.50pm
May.03Copying T’s through the China Syndrome (42.6GB) at 10.56pm
May.06Copying T’s through the Foundtain (38.8GB) at 10pm
May.07I noticed the connection quality on Skype has been really poor although the Internet connection on both ends seem fine. Per this post, I turned off UPNP and will see if this makes it better.
May.08Copying T’s through the Full Monty (35.2GB) at 10.16pm. Strange. I don’t know what happened to most of the files between The Davinci Code and The Fountain.
May.10Copying T’s until The Karate Kid (40.9GB) at 10pm
May.13Copying T’s until The Matador (44GB) at 12.30am
May.14Copying T’s until The Pacific (18GB) at 9am
May.16I should keep track since it seems to be taking forever. As of 2.26pm, on MediaPC, 35GB left, outgoing = 19,574 files, 76.4MB. On Mom’s MediaPC, 19GB left, 9,911 files, 38.7MB. On mom’s ThinkPad, 5GB left but am currently copying an additional 22.5GB (12.0GB left). Ah, reason it may be taking so long is that with multiple computers uploading to Bitcasa, it now also has to sync back to each computer. Oops, this is wrong as it will only download when it thinks it needs a cached version. By the way, Teahouse of the August Moon says it was uploaded, but gives an error when trying to access. At 4.15pm, the status for remaining to be uploaded switched from 34GB to 33GB. At 6.30pm, the status switched from 33GB to 32GB, 15,193 files 59.3MB. At 8.30pm, 31GB, 13,154 files 51.3MB. On Mom’s PC, 18GB 7,970 files, 31.1MB
May.17Media PC finished sending files to Bitcasa. At 9.54am, Mom’s media PC 17GB, 3,385 files 13.2MB. ThinkPad finished local copy of files. Upload to Bitcasa says 5GB, 31,339 files, 122MB. I think the # GBs to upload is inaccurate. There doesn’t seem to be any network activity on ThinkPad, though so I restarted Bitcasa. After restarting, network rate seemed to be 8-10% at peak. Then it went up to around 20% at peak. Network rate on mom’s media PC is a little over at 1% at best. Then later, up to around 2.5%.
May.18Copying T’s through The Sound of Music (43GB) at 11am. There’s still some cleanup for files missed from the previous copy.

Mini Xplus
May.04Uninstalled Archos Video Player, iPhone Notifications Lite
May.04Discovered the \ key is to put XBMC in and out of “Window” mode. The settings menu option didn’t help.
May.06I managed to forget how to switch to use the output per the composite video cables instead of HDMI on the Mini Xplus. Good thing for my gadget log! (Answer: Use the mode button on the remote.)
May.06Found out that for some reason, the composite video mode doesn’t work unless the HDMI cable is plugged in. Huh? The whole point of having to use a composite video is because HDMI is not available! Anyway, not sure about that one. Unfortunately, the video quality is very poor on her old Magnavox TV.
May.10Rearranged the home screen to 2×2. Netflix didn’t seem to work too well navigating by the Mini Xplus remote and without a mouse.
May.11I was able to get PS2 keyboard and mouse to work with the Mini Xplus with Belkin USB to PS/2 Adapter.
May.13Tried installing Speaker Boost but it didn’t seem to have any effect on the volume.
May.13Ugh. I noticed Amazon Prime addon is no longer working on XBMC which actually happened in April. A lot of XBMC users are unhappy with Amazon. A discussion is going on here. I may need to find another solution for Amazon Prime.
May.16Found that my Logitech USB speaker works with the Mini Xplus, so this helps a little with the volume problem with Netflix. Of course, likely, there would not be a problem if she had a new TV rather than an old CRT type TV.
May.17Decided not to keep the Mini Xplus hooked up to the TV. With some of the XBMC plugins, such as Amazon Prime, not working anymore, the usefulness on a standard TV did not seem as useful.

Mom’s PC

May.05Uninstalled Windows Live Messenger as Microsoft has replaced it with Skype.
May.07Copying some shows from her hard drive to Bitcasa. However, for some reason, it frequently complains about not being able to copy from the source. Upon rebooting, it can copy again, but seems to be occurring frequently.
May.12Set up new XBMC addon and configured YouTube addon.
May.15DVArchive seems to be having problems downloading. Keep getting save errors.

Mom’s ThinkPad

May.05Gets stuck on the Windows splash screen when booting up. Same thing when trying to use the Windows 7 DVD. During safe mode, stops at Classpnp.sys. Best I can tell, it’s a hard drive problem. Ordered new 2.5” IDE hard drive for the ThinkPad.
May.08Good news/bad news. Good news is that it was the hard drive causing the problem. Bad news is that I now have to reinstall everything.
May.08As the old hard drive was unusable and it prevented me from starting the Windows installation/repair CD, I could only bring up the Windows CD by using the new hard drive. I tried the new install option and it let me install, and I could bypass the Windows product key at first as it kept telling me the key was invalid, but when I booted up Windows and wanted to activate my key, it told me the key is only valid for upgrades, which is true. When I started the Windows installation CD and specified upgrade, it told me to use the upgrade option after booting up Windows. However, I don’t have an old Windows XP installation anymore. Fortunately I found a way around it. I did have to use Microsoft’s automated voice system to activate, though.
May.08Installed XBMC and still had the same graphics driver issue I had previously. Installed Chrome and SkyDrive. So far, about 10GB of the hard drive is used. Installed Windows Update. Sound card and Track point are working after Windows Update.
May.09Set up automatic login to Windows by using netplwiz from command prompt.
May.09To get other than the standard VGA driver working, I had to follow the instructions here again. In sumnmary, the steps are:
  1. Install Intel Graphics Controller 6.14.10.3722
  2. Installation initially fails, then run with recommended settings.
  3. Restart the computer
  4. From administrator-enabled command prompt: takeown /f c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
  5. cacls c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys /G windowsusername:F
  6. With notepad, edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
  7. Add “x” at beginning of record
  8. In Device Manager uninstall Standard VGA Adapter.
  9. Restart
  10. After reboot and install, it will not install properly. Go to device manager and manually update drivers to point to the downloaded drivers.
  11. Restart
May.09However, after I installed the drivers, it showed up the new drivers in Device Manager but with an exclamation mark. I edited the vgapnp.sys, but then uninstalled the drivers which it had installed, restored the original vgapnp.sys, and when I rebooted, the new drivers were working. Huh? Hopefully I won’t have to do this again!
May.09Install

  • DVD-RW drive
  • ULead Movie Factory
  • Canon Multipass 390 print driver
  • Fujitsu ScanSnap software
  • Set system restore
  • May.09The weirdest (frustrating) thing. The Windows 7 Canon Multipass 390 print driver did not work. And Windows Update does not show the Canon MP390 printer. Nothing has changed since I last installed the ThinkPad and was able to successfully install the print driver. Anyway, I was able to install the XP version and it works. Have to make sure the scanner part works, too.
May.15Strange. Upload to Bitcasa is about 3x slower on the ThinkPad at around 300Kb/sec.
May.18Discovered that VLC 2.x doesn’t seem to work with DVArchive streaming.

    Mom’s Tablet

    May.05Installed Yatse (XBMC remote).
May.06Installed Wifi Static and Zakus Wifi Profile. Also installed Droid VNC Server. I’d prefer static IP addresses so that it’s easier for me to connect to her tablet to see what is on her screen by using a VNC server app. Had to clean up her home screen because she managed to move things around (unintentionally).
    May.10Installed AndroidVNC Viewer.
May.12Set up Tasker to create notifiers from MailDroid.
May.12Set up new XBMC addon and configured YouTube addon.
May.13Tried installing Speaker Boost but it would just force close, so uninstalled.

    Mom’s Phone

    May.05Installed Yatse (XBMC remote).
May.06Installed Wifi Static and Zakus Wifi Profile. Also installed Droid VNC Server. Cleaned up her home screen.
    May.06Installed UPnPlay.
May.06Discovered that the Silent widget is also silencing the alarm on the phone.
May.10Installed Tasker. Trying to set it up so that speakerphone automatically goes on during the call. I was confused by two things. One is that if speaker is turned on while ringing, it seems to turn off too. Secondly, even when Tasker turns on the speakerphone, the speakerphone virtual button is no turned on like it does when you press it.
May.11I think stock e-mail is the best for Hotmail as it can be connected by Exchange instead of POP. This means if she reads an e-mail on one device, it will be reflected as being read on another. However, I don’t have a good solution for a good notification as the stock Gingerbread e-mail program does not provide sender and subject as part of the e-mail notification. I may keep MailDroid installed only for the purpose of a notification, and use Notifier Pro to display the notification, but through the use of Tasker, so that if she presses the notification, it doesn’t go to MailDroid. I assume this would not be a problem if I were to go to Android 4.0 or above.
May.11I was able to get Tasker to work with notifications. It was a misunderstanding what “Title” meant. It’s meant to filter out which notifications trigger the event.

    April 2013
    Android
Apr.01Found that I needed to set “Select debug app” under Developer options to Nothing (not previously set) in order for access to the SD card when plugging in a USB cable to my PC.
Apr.01Installed latest alpha version of CyanogenMod 10.
    Apr.027.00am-3.00pm 100% -> 50% (16 hrs)
Apr.02Installed OS Monitor. Uninstalled CPU Memory Monitor.
Apr.02Lookout seems to be taking a high % of CPU. I had previously disabled the status bar icon, but I’ve enabled it again to see if there is a difference.
    Apr.03Installed Root Browser Lite.
Apr.03Periodic disconnects from wifi. Tried the following which I found on the Cyanogenmod forum for Sony Xperia Mini:
    turn off wifi
    remove /data/misc/dhcp/dhcpcd-wlan0.lease
    turn on wifi
The same file did not exist, but I renamed the one which was there. So far, so good.
    Apr.05Installed BateriCat.
Apr.07I had not really been running Link2SD on the Sony Xperia x10, so when I tried, it didn’t work as it couldn’t recognize the 2nd partition. The workaround is to make 3 partitions, with the 3rd partition the regular SD card partition, the 2nd partition as the ext2 partition for Link2SD, and the first partition as a dummy partition. In addition to this workaround, you can flash a fix documented here with the file here but since Rogers locked the bootloader, I can’t get to recovery mode to flash the fix.
Apr.07Sony Xperia x10: Installed Groove IP so that calls can be made with Google Voice while connected to wifi even though there is no SIM card on this phone.
Apr.08In order to see what is draining the battery so much, I have removed as many “unnecessary” apps as I could.
Apr.08Installed latest nightly build of Cyanogenmod 10.
Apr.14After loading latest version of CyanogenMod 10, having problems with dropped wifi connections, so re-performed the steps from April 03. This time I found the exact file name.
Apr.18Installed System Panel Lite, Notable, Status Agenda.
Apr.19Uninstalled BateriCat, Notable. Cleared Davlik cache. Reduced size of Davlik cache in system/build.prop to 42m.
    Apr.19Installed Sherpa.
Apr.24Installed latest nightly build of CyanogenMod 10.
Apr.259.00am-4.15pm 100% -> 76% (30.2 hrs). Perhaps improved battery performance is due to the latest build.
Apr.25Ordered a higher capacity battery for the Xperia Mini. It arrived today! Installed it.
    Apr.258.00am-2.36pm 100% -> 81% (34.7 hrs). Some improvement but not lots.
Apr.27.Battery seems to run hot. Previous battery had low temperature around 27C and high around 40C. This one’s low is usually in the 40sC although I did see it at 37C. However, often running in the 50sC, even as high as 69C. Phone shut down once, I assume due to high temperature. Also, phone doesn’t seem to want to charge if temperature is above 55C. I don’t know if the temperature is really that high as it doesn’t feel that hot.
    Apr.28Installed Dragon Mobile Assistant
Apr.29Phone shutdown with new battery. Need to return it.
    Apr.297.00am-3.20pm 100% -> 65% (23.8 hrs). Back to original battery.

    PC
Apr.049.00am Dallas time: Started G’s (21.3GB)... Update: 9.00pm Dallas time: 2 copy failures during the day. Better than the previous copy. I’m not sure why Bitcasa says it is uploading 33GB…
    Apr.0611.40pm Dallas time. Starting H’s (45GB)...
Apr.06Argh. Terastation is having problems starting.
Apr.07Even though Bitcasa said it had no more files to upload, it seems some files have not been uploaded yet. Since last batch is 45GB, I will allow Bitcasa a chance to upload any not yet discovered files before allowing the 45GB to complete.
Apr.09I noticed a lot of files on the Bitcasa Infinite Drive whose size is 0KB. Obviously those need to be recopied, but the normal Windows copy would likely simply tell me the file is already there.
    Apr.11Copying I’s (41.8GB)...
    Apr.14Copying J’s and K’s (32GB) at 4.05am Dallas time.
Apr.14Tried to access the PC in the study remotely. Took a couple of times but it was able to wake up from sleep.
Apr.14On the Study PC, I’ve reinstalled SkyDrive and set it up so it is not automatically linked to the files under My Documents.
    Apr.15Starting L’s (30.9GB) at 1.30pm
    Apr.18Started M’s through Morning Market(42.6GB)at 12.26am
    Apr.21Copying rest of M’s (23.5GB) at 5.40am
Apr.21Installed Windows Media Player plug-in to watch FNN on wwitv.com. It works. Disabled the plug-in afterwards.
    Apr.23Copying N’s (20.3GB) at 11.28am
    Apr.24Copying O’s (22.8GB) at 10.43pm
    Apr.25Copying P’s and Q’s (35.8GB) at 5.33pm
    Apr.28Copying R’s (22.7GB) at 7.28am
    Apr.29Copying S’s to sherlock (30.7GB)around 11am

    Tablet
    Apr.03Installed OS Monitor for Tablets.
    Apr.30Purchased Swype keyboard.

    Mini Xplus
Apr.01May have to consider External Keyboard Helper Pro ($2.99) instead of Null keyboard as pressing Enter on the keyboard with Null keyboard does not act as if the Enter key is being pressed. Instead, it generally considers the key which was last highlighted without Null keyboard as the default key. My old ThinkPad Full-Size UltraNav USB Keyboard works with this device. Side comment: I don’t know why they replaced this keyboard with the Trackpoint only keyboard.
Apr.01So far, no luck getting the microphone on the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 and the Logitech USB microphone to work.
Apr.03Tried to install OS Monitor but no luck. Installed Quick System Info PRO and System Panel Lite.
Apr.13Installed Twilight, which automatically can adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the time of day.
Apr.14Tried to install Shiprack, but installation failed.
Apr.14I noticed CPU stays busy for a while after plugging in the external hard drive.
Apr.14Installed Speed Math Trainer, CardDroid Math, Meteor Blitz.
Apr.19Installed Outlook, WP Notifications, iPhone Notifications Lite, Pop (Notifications).
    Apr.20Uninstalled Outlook.
Apr.21Wifi works at Marriott Courtyard (but not Hilton Danube). However, Google Play Store doesn’t seem to work.
Apr.21Looks like all videos from mom’s streaming list on her homepage works except Suze Orman.
Apr.21Installed Zeus Mail (formerly WinDroid). I wonder if I broke Google Play Store. It works on my other accounts but not my mom’s.
Apr.30Wow. Found out my old NetVista wireless keyboard (SK-8808, P/N 19K1950) works with Android. I found out that the volume and E-mail buttons works! Now if only I could find the documentation to configure the rest of the buttons…

    Mom’s PC
Apr.08Not sure what happened but Internet stopped working at my mom’s. She had to give the modem serial # to Comcast and it was working again. I noticed she was assigned a new IP address.
Apr.12There seems to be sporadic behavior from her PC and her ThinkPad. I won’t know what’s going on until I can take a look. Perhaps the Mini Xplus will be a good alternative for her.
    Apr.12For some reason, sending shows to my mom is very slow. Averaging around 24MB/hr. 140MB at 1 am. Update: 280MB and 20MB respectively at 7.45am, stuck for a while but 440MB and 176MB at 2:03pm. Update: Looks like everything back to normal. 8.35pm Dallas time: 1327MB (100%) and 3392MB (90.5%). I had told my mom to try unplugging and plugging in the modem. Maybe that helped. Or maybe it was just something wrong with her provider Comcast or my provider Verizon. 11.15pm 3620MB and 56MB (new Morning Market). 1.10am 3747MB (100%) and 1148 (86.9%). 5.54am 196MB (5.6%). 1.34pm 224MB. 1.59pm 180MB ??. 3.03pm 272MB (7.2%). 3.14pm 224MB (5.9%). 4.26pm 328MB (8.7%). 4.27pm 276MB. 5.52pm 392MB. 7.15pm 468MB and 0MB. 12.30am 1144MB (30.5%) and 0MB. 1.38am 2244MB (59.9%). 3.51am 3741MB (100%) and 540MB (40.6%). 4.37am 1327MB (100%). 4.06pm 132MB (9.9%). 6.27pm 412MB (31%). 7.43pm 548MB (41.2%). 12.11am 1152MB (86.7%). 12.23am 1328MB (100%). 8.16pm 236MB (17.8%). 8.56pm 288MB (21.7%). 4/16 12.31am 1288MB (97.2%). 7.52pm 180MB (13.7%). 8.40pm 232MB (17.6%).

    March 2013
    Android
Mar.01Installed Battery Widget Reborn Beta, Micro CPU Monitor.
    Mar.018.00am-4.30pm 100% -> 70% (28.3 hrs)
Mar.01I noticed the latest nightly build of CyanogenMod 10 for Xperia Mini does not always seem to reconnect to wifi.
    Mar.05Installed SlideBar Lite. Uninstalled SwipePad.
    Mar.06Installed Battery Doctor (Battery Saver).
    Mar.07Uninstalled Battery Widget Reborn Beta
    Mar.087.00am-8.30pm 100% -> 46% (25.0 hrs)
Mar.15Unified Remote wasn’t working anymore. After trying a USB bluetooth adapter, uploading newer version on both PC and phone, unpairing and pairing again, moving the app off of the SD card and back on, quitting and restarting the app, restarting the phone, it finally was able to work.
Mar.22Installed and uninstalled Andy. Re-installed official XBMC remote.
Mar.24Installed XBMC remote control and tried to install Yatse but the latter kept giving me a package error. Still no luck using phone as a XBMC remote control at the hotel.
    Mar.2412.30pm-5.00pm 100% -> 27% (6.2 hrs)
Mar.24Installed Better Drain Analyzer, Battery Stats Plus, CPU Memory Monitor, DeepSleep Battery Saver, Yatse. Uninstalled Battery Doctor. Uninstalled DeepSleep Battery Saver. Even when turned “off”, it was using 25% of the CPU.
Mar.27Other things seem to be keeping the CPU busy. Anyway, uninstalled XBMC remote, Yatse, Amazon. Updated TuneWiki.
Mar.28Lowest battery temp reading so far is 29C.
Mar.29Lowest battery temp reading so far is 27C.
    Mar.29Installed new screen guard.
Mar.29I’ve been interested in the app but never bought it, but since it is on sale for $1.99, I bought Tasker. The first automated profile/task I set up is for my phone to say “Battery is at xx%. You may want to recharge. if the battery is less than 60% and it is past 3 pm.
    Mar.29Installed Swapps, HDR Camera, Camera360.
Mar.30Xperia x10: Freed up about 100MB RAM by using LinkSD. Also, installed HDR Camera, Camera360.

    PC
Mar.01Bitcasa offers unlimited cloud storage for $99/year and had an introductory offer of $49 for the first year, so I signed up. I am finally starting to upload my movies to the cloud as a backup. I wonder how long it will take to upload 1TB and that’s only for starters. Even though I might need a new NAS, $99 per year would take 8 years to cost as much as a $800 8TB NAS.
Mar.02I thought the Sewell PC to TV device was not working properly as I was having problems when I tested on my last business trip. However, possibly, it is a cable problem of S-Video. I’ll need to do some more experimentation to confirm.
Mar.06Seems like Bitcasa has problems freezing. Obviously this makes using it useless if you are not able to access your data. This was preventing me from uploading large files. However, I found on a forum that someone was able to get around the freezing problem when using XP. I have one (or maybe two) very slow computers which still run XP. Slow computers being able to upload files is better than a faster computer not being able to.
Mar.06There are also complaints about corrupted files being stored on Bitcasa. This would make using Bitcasa as a backup source disastrous. However, one aspect regarding movies, if I were to stream from Bitcasa, then I would be able to confirm the integrity of the backup file.
Mar.09On the Tablet PC (old ThinkPad X41), I’ve decided I need to delete as much as possible. It just doesn’t have the horsepower to do much these days. Since one of the things the Tablet PC does is control the home automation, I’d need to find a substitute. I was considering Mi Casa Verde’s Vera Lite but ran across this blog.
Mar.10On the XBMC forum, someone has written that using XBMC and Bitcasa works well. I asked if he meant it conceptually or if he has it working well as many people are complaining about computers freezing on large fie uploads.
Mar.15Found that in XBMC, there is an option to identify which sound device should play the audio. Since I hook it up to the TV, I need to specify the headphone jack. The problem though is that I can’t seem to specify the default device so that it would automatically play from the earphone jack is there is something plugged into it and from the PC speakers if something is not plugged into the earphone jack. Maybe they’ll address this with the next version.
Mar.16I’ve set up to send e-mail from links in Chrome to use Gmail as the default e-mail program by installing the Send from Gmail extension.
Mar.16According to Windows Explorer, there are 95GB in the Bitcasa folder for Movies and Bitcasa says 16GB still to upload. The cache was about 77GB. Update: 9pm Dallas time 15GB. Update 2: 4am Dallas time 13GB, 337 files and 95GB per Explorer. I don’t know though if the info from Explorer is considering what is in cache. After deleting a bunch of synctoy files, it’s down to 46.6GB and 269 files.
Mar.17Update: At 2pm Dallas time, Explorer says 44.7GB and 267 files. Cache is 77.9GB. Bitcasa says “Finalizing” implying no data to upload, but it has not been reporting any data to upload ever since I had to reboot the machine earlier in the day due to Bitcasa freezing. Bitcasa is using 180MB memory and machine is at 80% of physical memory in use.
Mar.17Decided to remove Bitcasa from the computer and install again (after ensuring cache is cleared out). However, it is taking a long time to uninstall… Over an hour now. I’d assume it was frozen, but the hard drive seems to be freeing some space slowly. At this rate, will take hours to complete the uninstall. Update:
At 5:30pm Dallas time, Explorer says there are 60.9GB in cache, 304,678 files and 103,307 folders and 619GB free on the hard drive. Update: Around 7pm Dallas time, it completed uninstalling Bitcasa.
Mar.17Reinstalling has resulted in much better performance with transfer rate around 1.4-1.5MB/sec. This, though, is the copy rate, not necessarily the transfer rate to Bitcasa. A 2GB file copied in around 30 minutes, but the outgoing folder in cache still contained about 15MB of data which took about an additional hour to process. Ah, since I was copying a file from my NAS, that would explain the earlier network speeds which was simply copying the file from the NAS to my local drive. Upon uploading, network rate seems to be approximately 4% of network capability per Task Manager.
Mar.19Was able to load all the mpg files beginning with A’s. Started B’s. Still 10GB left of the first half of B’s at 9pm Dallas time.
Mar.22Starting to copy the C’s… 13 files totaling 21GB. Note that the cache is about 56GB, over the limit I specified. However, at one point, it was over 63GB, so it does seem to be managing itself. Also, I had to copy over some files where I had received some error messages. I received an error message for “Buying the Cow” but it seemed like the file was uploaded ok. To be on the safe side, I likely should re-copy it. Update: Sometimes it seems the initial copy from the NAS device to the PC running Bitcasa, the copying of the files come to almost a standstill, even though it is only using the internal network to copy the files.
Mar.22Tried to use the XBMC remote app for controlling XBMC on my PC. Did not work from the hotel Internet even though I can ping my PC from my phone.
Mar.29Started copying E’s onto Bitcasa. Still getting occasional errors in copying, though.
Mar.30I thought my age old Eye-Fi card would be useful again to be able to automatically upload pictures, but it seems to be dead.
Mar.319pm Dallas time: Finished the E’s… Would have been faster except every time it encounters an error, it stops copying waiting for what to do in regards to the error. Anyway, now I have to re-copy those files which it didn’t due to errors.
    Mar.3110.20pm Dallas time, started copying F’s (29.6GB)

    Tablet
Mar.02Installed Archos Video Player (Free). Installed AllergyCast and Allergy Alert. Both do not support tablet landscape mode.
Mar.06I noticed there is a lag when streaming a video from my library with Archos Video Player. The video and audio were not in sync. I don’t know if it could be related to the fact I am uploading my library to Bitcasa, but XBMC did not seem to have any problems with the same video.
Mar.08Tried the IOGear bluetooth keyboard with the tablet. No problem. Trackpad also works. I like how Android 4.x is smart enough to know when a physical keyboard is used so the onscreen keyboard does not appear. On my mom’s tablet, running Gingerbread, I’ll need to try Null keyboard to see if that helps, but seems to me, I already tried that.

    Mini XPlus
Mar.02Even though XBMC Android friendly (XAF) build of XBMC uses MX Player for improved video performance, I found that with one streaming website, the video and audio are not synched. Sigh. Also, the librtmp.so fix for Amazon Prime Instant Video plugin doesn’t work, so still not Amazon videos available on this box. Looks like the usefulness of this box is getting less and less.
Mar.05Seems like XBMC has been able to put out a new experimental version with HW acceleration here. Worth a try. Update: Performance, while laggy at times, seems acceptable as a backup. At least the box is not totally useless anymore. In addition, this version did not require the librtmp.so fix in order to see Amazon Prime Instant Videos.
Mar.05Installed Archos Video Player. Unlike when I installed it on the tablet, this one seems to require the extra $5 mpeg-2 codec app in order to play my recorded videos. Also, not sure if it is the app or the device, but seems to have frequent connection problems to the library.
Mar.06OK, basically seems I should give up on Archos Video Player. It has the capability to allow an external video player to play the video, but when MX Player is specified as the external player, it still doesn’t play the video, even though I can play the same video on MX Player through UPnPlay. Rather than specifying the location of the movies through a Windows networked folder, I changed the source as UPnP, but the video still would not play through the Archos Video Player and seemed to have buffering/freeze problems when playing them through MX Player. Don’t know if the buffering/freeze problem was related to my uploading my library to Bitcasa.
Mar.08No go with the bluetooth dongle. Seems like bluetooth was not a consideration in the build of the ROM. Seems like I would need to consider a new ROM like CyanogenMod except I can’t find one for the device. There’s some discussion here about ROMs which support Bluetooth dongles.
Mar.09Discovered that my old Gyrotransport Air-Mouse (GPT65M) works with this device. Actually I have two and one isn’t working. Since it had an old battery in it, maybe the replacement battery is not making a clean connection inside the device. Update: They’re both working now.
Mar.22For some reason, the device is not connecting to the wifi here at the hotel. However, the wired LAN works although it took a while before it was recognized. It may require me doing some things to get it recognized, such as turning off DHCP and turning it on.
Mar.22Updated Firefox, Dolphin, Dolphin Jetpack, and installed Opera. Updated FlashPlayer from here. Tried to see which browser could support Flash. Dolphin worked ok. Standard browser had problems playing videos. Chrome didn’t recognize Flash. Firefox was (too) slow in general. And the video under Opera stuttered.
Mar.24Installed and uninstalled Solid Alarm Clock Simple. Installed Mood Alarm Clock and Supradyn Morning Energy Alarm. Installed CPU Memory Monitor. Lookout was taking 90%+ of the CPU for over 20 minutes. Not sure what is going on there.
Mar.28While I’d like to have CM10 running on this device, I read somewhere that the AV out would not work anymore. This is a no-go. So the other option is to find a compatible keyboard. Some candidates are listed here. I’d also like to see if there are compatible webcams. Some info on same link and also more here.

    February 2013
    Android
    Feb.03Installed BTMono.
Feb.05Ugh, while jogging, the phone flew out of the arm band. Both my Sony Xperia x10 Mini and Xperia Mini have been rugged. This was no exception. It flew from almost shoulder height to the concrete street, but no cracks and everything worked. The strange thing is what didn’t work anymore was the SD card itself. It’s like bumping someone in the head and they get amnesia. Anyway, so since I offloaded a lot of apps (and data) onto the SD card, lots was lost. Fortunately, I made a backup late last year, so I would have lost only about 1 1/2 month of data at most, but unfortunately, I had trouble locating the backup. Finally, it was where it probably shouldn’t have been. The new card I put in seems a little peppier. Originally Link2SD had problems moving apps to SD card, but clearing Davlik-Cache solved the problem.
Feb.06For some reason, trying to select a sound file for Colorful Alarm resulted in “unsupported file” again. Last time, I thought it was because there was no app which had an association to mp3. However, even after installing (again) TuneWiki and Google Play Music, it still provided the same message. Then, researching this showed that it could be some other installed app causing this message. I tried to use some techniques to see which apps were trying to use “mediaserver”, but I didn’t find anything obvious… But since I had some half-installed apps (were installed but on the SD card which crashed), I started to delete some unnecessary apps. I don’t know which one cleared it up, but now, I no longer get the “unsupported file” message anymore.
    Feb.06Installed SuperSU to replace SuperUser.
Feb.08Moved a lot of apps to SD card. Upgraded Wunderlist. For some reason, the widget was slow to show data, but eventually it did. And it does automatically update unlike the widget in the previous version.
Feb.25Installed latest nightly update of CyanogenMod 10
Feb.27Still having problems with Colorful Alarm and “Unsupported file” for the personalized alarm sound. Found out that some apps cannot access files not on the phone’s memory, so theoretically, this might mean I have to keep the personalized sound on the SD card to make sure this app can access it. It didn’t seem to work initially (still received “unsupported file” error message, but eventually I was able to select the music file.

    Tablet
    Feb.08Upgraded Wunderlist.
Feb.08Argh. The Amazon Prime Instant Video plugin is not working on the Toshiba Excite AT300 tablet. I would guess it is the same problem I had with my mom’s tablet. However, since this tablet is not rooted, I cannot even see the log to find out what the error is. I did find that Amazon plugin works with the latest nightly build of XBMC but I had some sporadic behavior. Sigh. Last time I buy a Toshiba tablet. Some tips on using ADB commands are here and here. My solution so far is to have installed the latest nightly build of XBMC.
Feb.09My conclusion is that the odd behavior was not from XBMC but from the wifi on the Toshiba tablet. I need to see if others have reported problems and how they resolved it.

    PC
Feb.02For some reason, my computer (ThinkPad) kept freezing when trying to make a copy of the Windows 8 drive I created. I don’t know if it was the drive or the computer. Anyway, looks like it was copied though. Am trying some things on a different computer to make sure the drives are ok.
Feb.03Hmmm, PC would not boot up the Windows 8 drives from a USB drive.
Feb.04Hmmm, PC would not boot up Windows 8 even when it is the primary drive.
    Your PC needs to restart
Please hold down the power button
    Error Code: 0×0000005D
    Parameters:
    0×030F0401
    0×756E6547
    0×49656E69
    0×6C65746E
I found some documentation referring to settings in the BIOS. Since I am trying to run this on an older computer, the BIOS doesn’t have these settings.
Feb.04I’ll have to see if I can update the BIOS, but confirmed that Windows 8 drives seem to work with my ThinkPad. Wifi didn’t work, but I’ll assume it was just not having compatible drivers for wifi only.
Feb.06Interestingly enough, I found IE not working on my work computer. Update: It worked after rebooting.
Feb.08Had problems viewing our internal web pages at work with Chrome, but clearing cache and cookies cleared up the problem.
Feb.25Discovered that the current version of Splashtop for remote desktop access requires a subscription to use outside of your home network. Fortunately older versions do not require the subscription. I use LogMeIn for usual remote desktop access, which is free, but their free version does not support audio.

    Mini XPlus Android Device
Feb.16Discovered that to vary the output from HDMI to composite video, you need to use the Mode button on the remote.
Feb.16Upgraded Lightning Launcher, Lookout, XBMC to the latest nightly built. Copied librtmp.so but won’t be able to check if Amazon Prime Instant Video is working until I get home. Most likely a lag in streaming video as I tried other streaming services. I could try to overclock but I found that it seems this may be possible only with a new kernel. I might have to give up on XBMC for this device and go to a version which utilizes a different videoplayer. Installed System Mini Info, Quadrant Standard, Antutu Benchmark, SkyDrive, ClockSync, Link2SD, Root Explorer.
Feb.21Since there are limited options with the current ROM, I may consider a new room. There is discussion here on installing CM10.
Feb.22I should keep track that the nightly builds for XBMC is here Info to determine if your device is neon or non-neon is here. There is a blog on the Mini X here. New firmware exists here. E-control is software which allows you to operate the Mini XPlus from another Android device. Software was on the included CD and also located here.
Feb.23For some reason, Quadrant Standard does not work on Mini XPlus, but Antutu Benchmark does. Total score: 2959, CPU 848, GPU 1104, RAM 613, IO 394
Feb.23So far, so good with the XBMC alternative. It uses MX Player as an external player instead of the one built within XBMC. I need to make sure Amazon will work with this version. Disadvantages though are:
    • Not tightly integrated with XBMC
    • Not able to boost volume like I could with the XBMC Player
Feb.23Installed droid VNC server, Null keyboard, Micro CPU Monitor. Updated Google Maps.
Feb.23I’ve been using the Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901 as the keyboard for this device, but I notice the Enter key doesn’t work. A bit of a problem.
    Feb.23Installed Adobe Flash Player.

    Mom’s Android
Feb.01Installed the latest software update from Republic Wireless. Found that this disables previous root which has been patched, but a new root method is described here. Ugh. Update failed… on the last day I am here. Not sure if the phone will be able to be updated. Worst case scenario is phone gets bricked, so not worth the risk.
Feb.08Found good information here from this thread on how to apply OTA for those with rooted phones. Now I just have to hope these instructions still work the next chance I see my mom.

    Mom’s ReplayTV
Feb.1Replaced the hard drive on her ReplayTV which was moved to the bedroom with a 400GB hard drive, replacing the 200GB hard drive which was there. Funny that I was not able to download/archive all the shows from the 200GB as the download wouldn’t complete. Anyway, also funny that this 400GB hard drive already had her shows from last summer. I wonder why it was taken out. Sigh. Where’s a log when I need one? Hmmmm, is this the same drive which was saying it wasn’t an initialized disk? Fortunately, when I went through the process, it kept all the previous shows…! Sigh. I am lucky I didn’t wipe things out.

    January 2013
    Android
Jan.03Phone had problem picking up GPS when going jogging. Turned screen off and on and then it was able to pick up the GPS signal. During jog, phone rebooted.
    Jan.048.00am-2.25pm 100% -> 77% (27.9 hrs)
Jan.04During jog, GPS signal was lost.
Jan.05Installed Adobe Acrobat Reader, JustPictures, TeslaLED, TalkPal, Jeannie. Uninstalled TalkPal. Updated The Weather Channel, Yahoo Weather, TuneWiki, IP Camera View Lite, Shiprack, Simple Calendar Widget, Mini Info Classic.
    Jan.06Installed Zime, a new kind of calendar/organizer.
Jan.07During jog, GPS signal was lost.
    Jan.07Updated Swype Beta.
Jan.08Moved a lot of apps to SD card. Uninstalled standard keyboard from this ROM.
Jan.08Installed SMS Unread Count. However, for it to work, it has to be installed as a system app (thus, requires a rooted phone).
Jan.08Installed FlightTrack and PageOnce Travel. Updated Lookout Security, Lightning Launcher.
Jan.10Installed Pocket. Uninstalled the Google Calendar which came with the ROM since I am using the standard Google Calendar from Google Play. Since I am keeping track at home, the ROM seems to reboot fairly often, but I’m still happy having Jellybean. Since this is the alpha version, I should at some point load the most recent alpha version.
Jan.10Tried to update Skype but received an error during installation. Later, I noticed a lot people complaining about the latest upgrade, so it’s perhaps good I was not able to upgrade.
    Jan.117.00am-5.00pm 100% -> 64% (29.4 hrs)
Jan.12May try to resurrect the old x10 mini but one concern would be the battery life. The x10 mini was built with a non-replaceable battery, but people here and here showed how to replace the battery.
Jan.12Will set up the x10 mini as a spare, based on CyanogenMod 7.2.2.1. Software to load:
    1. Lightning Launcher
    2. Battery Widget ZSeems too small on the small screen
    3. Battery Widget (by Jinasis)
    4. Google Drive
    5. FoxFi
    6. Google+
    7. JustPictures
    8. Life360
    9. Lookout Security
    10. Google Maps w/ Latitude
    11. Play Music
    12. The Eye
    13. Google Voice
    14. Better Direct DialRequired because this version of CM requires call phone permission in order to use a direct dial shortcut, but rest of Android doesn’t require this permission anymore
    15. Amazon App
    16. Link2SD
    17. Screebl Pro
    18. SMS Unread Count
    19. CallFilter
    20. Root Browser LiteI found this app does the same function I need from Root Explorer and it is free. I have Root Explorer but under a different account as this phone.
    21. Titanium Backup
    22. Skype ?
    23. Japanese input
    24. Linda Application Manager
    25. Not an app but have to set up mobile network for data
    26. Set up ringtones
    Jan.14Installed and uninstalled Sanity.
Jan.15Tried activating LBE Privacy Guard, but phone crashed twice… So the current version of the ROM does not seem compatible. Uninstalled LBE Privacy Guard and Any.DO.
    Jan.166.00am-4.49pm 100% -> 61% (26.5 hrs)
Jan.18Noticed PDANet was not working anymore. It says I may have to load new drivers. I am guessing it is related to running new ROM on the Xperia Mini. Perhaps PDANet software has to be updated?
    Jan.27Installed FreeCaddie
Jan.28Apps to try: UCCW (Ultimate custom widget), Free Golf GPS & Scorecard
Jan.31Installed and uninstalled Free Golf GPS & Scorecard.

    Tablet
Jan.03Installed Shazam, MusiXMatch, Lyricz… Comparison is here.
Jan.04Installed Glimmr, JustPictures, Flipboard. Installed and uninstalled Flickr.
Jan.05JustPictures has a problem that after a while, it “fails” to load pictures. I found that rebooting fixes this problem, although the Photostream thumbnail still fails. Removing and adding the account back solves this problem. Wrote a comment on their website.
Jan.06Installed Zime, but had to sideload it since Google Play said it wasn’t compatible with my device. I noticed that it only supports portrait mode.
Jan.07Installed Toshiba Excite ADB drivers from here on my PC so I can access the tablet from the PC.
    Jan.08Updated Lightning Launcher.
Jan.10Installed Groove IP Lite. Can now make and receive calls on the tablet using Google Voice #.
Jan.18Updated MX Player (for Neon devices). Installed XAF Custom Build of XBMC.

    Android Box
Jan.06Someone has posted a firmware update here. I should make sure though how the performance is on the current firmware before trying it. Also, may be good to make sure the webcam works on the current firmware for comparison purposes.

    PC
Jan.10There have been issues with the automated lights recently, mainly due to the old PC running the automation software. However, today, I noticed it is able to turn on/off the family room lights when before, it didn’t seem to be able to do that.
Jan.12Sent an 1.5GB external hard drive back to Seagate to be replaced under warranty.
Jan.16Not PC related but the upstairs wireless IP camera hasn’t been working for a while. Seemed like only need to be reset. It started working again after unplugging it and plugging it back in.
Jan.20Ah, noticed that to access one of the webpages I created on Google a while ago, I created it on Google Sites but somehow it is accessible from http://sites.google.com/a/domainname instead of http://sites.google.com/site/googlename. Not quite sure how I did that.
Jan.28Was going to try to see if I could use a cloned disk from another PC on my ThinkPad to start the Windows 8 upgrade process, but I got the blue screen of death. Will have to try something else.
Jan.31Created two hard drives with Windows 8 upgrade to take advantage of the $39 upgrade price and free Windows Media Center add on.

    Entertainment System
Jan.26For some reason, the Verizon FIOS cable box froze and there was no video although there was sound. Unplugging and plugging back in solved the problem.

    Mom’s Android Phone
Jan.04Installed Linda Application Manager, SkyDrive, Lightning Launcher. For my mom’s phone, I thought a tiled look would be better. Still not scrollable, although I may add some emergency contact numbers at the top on her home screen.
Jan.14Installed Sanity. There are two functions which are interesting to use for my mom. One is announce caller. However, since Google’s text to speech does not allow a way to correct pronunciation of a name, it’s less helpful than it could be. The other is to automatically turn on the speakerphone. However, there seems to be some quirk where it doesn’t work upon initial answering of a call. I’ve only been able to get it to work consistently when when holding the phone to your ear and then away from your ear. There are other apps which can do this like SpeakerPhone Ex and DriveMODE.
Jan.15I have to remember that my mom’s Republic Wireless phone is billed under bandwidth.com
Jan.18Strangely, Maps seemed to have been uninstalled, so I had to reinstall. Similarly, Swype Beta was no longer an available keyboard, so I had to go back into settings to make it available again.
Jan.18Having problems with phone sound turning itself off. Will uninstall Silent phone mode to see if it is the cause.
Jan.21Installed Silent mode widget as a replacement of Silent phone mode.
Jan.22Installed JustPictures, WinDroid Mail, Spotify. Uninstalled Hotmail.
Jan.23Installed Root Browser Lite, SkyDrive, Speaker Phone Ex. Uninstalled WinDroid Mail, Sanity. Installed and uninstalled Auto Speakerphone, Auto Speaker.
Jan.29Installed adb drivers for Motorola Defy to allow it to work with Android Screen Capture as documented here.

New home screen for mom’s phone using Lightning Launcher (which is the best launcher app for Android IMHO):

    Mom’s Tablet
Jan.20Started to set up the tablet home screen with more of a tiled look, like her phone.
Jan.21Installed JustPictures, Groove IP, WinDroid Mail, WP Notifications. Installed and uninstalled Calista Mail, AwayFind. Looking for the best e-mail client which will allow notifications to stay on her screen until dismissed but doesn’t interfere with the operating of the tablet as documented here. Uninstalled Hotmail.
Jan.22Installed Pandora, Spotify. Pandora is behaving funny and after playing the initial song, the next songs are played as if they were on the wrong speed on an old turntable.
Jan.22My mom said that the stock alarm clock did not go off in the morning. I installed Alarm Clock Plus to see if it works better than the stock alarm. One feature about Alarm Clock Plus is that it will also flash lights to help wake her. However, the dismiss button for the alarm seems to be in an awkward position, in the lower right. Possibly as a way to ensure the person is awake and paying attention to what they are doing.
Jan.23Installed SkyDrive, Mood Alarm Clock. Uninstalled WinDroid Mail, Alarm Clock Plus.
Jan.24Tried the Android friendly version of XBMC (non-neon) along with MX Player, but in the end, loaded the standard Frodo version of XBMC which resolves some streaming plug-in problems. However, couldn’t get the Amazon Instant Video plug-in to work. Discussion about the plug-in is here. Perhaps I simply need to enter my Amazon credentials? Update: That wasn’t it, but there is some discussion here. Another try here.
Jan.24Found information that other people had problems with the alarm on the gTablet. One solution seems to be to prevent the tablet from going into “deep sleep” by setting the wifi sleep option to “Never sleeps”. We’ll have to see if this works. Update: Per my mom, the alarm is working.
Jan.25Installed MultiTouch Tester, Musical Piano Free, and Piano Perfect.
Jan.25Ah, found the catch with the “free” US account. It is only free on your desktop. Continuing to stream on your tablet or phone requires a premium account.
Jan.29Installed adb drivers for gTablet to get it to work with Android Screen Capture as described here.
Jan.29Still had problems with XBMC and Amazon Prime Instant Video, so uninstalled and reinstalled using latest build for non-neon devices (from January 27) from here and everything worked fine.

    Mom’s PC
Jan.12Mom said she received a fraud warning from Microsoft. Perhaps I used the wrong key when I installed Windows.
Jan.24The old NetVista all-in-one was slow and the screen was flickering, so I was planning on replacing it with a traditional (old) ThinkCentre computer which used to run her multimedia until I brought a more recent small form factor ThinkCentre. Anyway, the old desktop does not even start anymore. Sometimes the power does come on, but it doesn’t even provide any evidence the BIOS is running. Sigh. So looks like I have two PCs where I can try to salvage some parts. It is a good thing I brought the ThinkPad.
Jan.24XBMC with streaming plug-in and Amazon Instant Video plug-in is working.
    Jan.25Installed Spotify.
Jan.28I’ve been having problems downloading shows from ReplayTV. Most of the time, it would not be able to complete the download. I’m now trying to use an external drive as the import area, and it seems to be working. Thus, there could be some disk problem on the main hard drive. This would explain why my mom has had problems with the computer and has had to use the Windows repair disk many times.Update So much for that idea. Still got the same error even with the import location changed to a different hard drive.

    Mom’s ThinkPad
    Jan.22Installed SkyDrive.
Jan.29Installed Android SDK, adb drivers, and Android Screen Capture as described here.

    Mom’s Entertainment System
Jan.24I found a good deal on a used ReplayTV, so my mom said she would like a second one. I finally completed installing it. I put her current one with 400GB in her bedroom and put the new one (250GB) in the living room. I was able to greatly simplify the wiring as the old set up, one ReplayTV had to be able to feed two TVs and I set it up so she could watch one thing while recording another. However, since she has only one digital cable box per TV and she wants a digital cable box in her guest room, then she can no longer have two digital cable boxes just for one ReplayTV/TV set up, so she now has to watch something she is recording, but with two ReplayTVs, she can record in one room while watching in another.
Jan.26For some reason, the living room ReplayTV couldn’t communicate to the bedroom ReplayTV. I’m not sure if the culprit was the living room ReplayTV, bedroom ReplayTV, neither, or both.

    December 2012
    Android
Dec.02Need to try to calibrate the battery on the Xperia phone by following these steps.
Dec.03Installed MindMeister and Ping & DNS.
Dec.03Trying to get my phone to be able to connect to my PC (instead of other way around). Have not had success with the Edimax USB wireless adapter. Am trying to try Ad Hoc again, although last time was likely when I was running CyanogenMod, so even though my phone is rooted, I’ll need to find the right changes to be able to connect to an Ad Hoc network. Will try things documented here.
Dec.04Ad Hoc seems to have worked with the following settings in /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf:
    network={
    ssid=”jimrin”
    mode=1
    frequency=2412
    key_mgmt=NONE
    priority=50
    }
but it appears that the file is updated by Android though so resetting the information may be required for each connection. Also, this requires my wireless adapter on the PC to have a fixed static address, which needs to be changed back to DHCP when I want to connect to a normal wifi network. It is disappointing that I haven’t been able to get the Edimax USB wireless adapter to work yet. I also turned my firewall off while testing this. I’ll need to see if it made a difference or not.
Dec.05Installed Qando. Updated Adobe Reader, Pocket, Speedtest, Google+, Google Voice.
Dec.06The Edimax EW-7811Un seems to be working as an Access Point now, but doesn’t seem to work reliably. I’ll have to play around with it some more. If it is unreliable, I wonder if I have a defective one, or if this is as good as it gets with these.
Dec.07Updated Lookout Security. Uninstalled Opera Mini.
Dec.09Updated Waze, Titanium Backup, SleepBot, Shiprack Package Tracker, Shazam, Screen Off and Lock, Root Explorer, Pocket, Mini Info Classic, Life360 Family Locator, LED Light, Handy Scanner Free, GPS Status and Toolbox, aCar
Dec.09Sometimes still having problems connecting to the PC. Need to make sure everything is set up properly:
    1. PC has Internet connection
    2. The firewall has been disabled
    3. Network adapter which has Internet connection is set up for sharing
    4. Internet sharing is set up to be shared with the specific wifi adapter connecting to the phone
    5. The specific wifi adapter should be set up with a fixed IP address and DNS servers
    6. In case of ad hoc, the wpa_suppliant.conf must be set up to be able to connect to an ad hoc network
    7. The specific network on the phone should be set up with a fixed IP address which corresponds to the fixed IP address of the wifi adapter. Somewhere along the line, 192.168.100.x is being set up on the wifi adapter
Dec.09Installed Data Traffic Monitor, Network Monitor Mini, OS Monitor, and Android Status.
Dec.10Installed utter! and Dragon Go. Discussion about utter! can be found here. Uninstalled Data Traffic Monitor, Network Monitor Mini, OS Monitor, and Android Status.
Dec.13Somehow I accidentally booted into “safe mode” on my phone and then when I booted up normally, the widgets I had set up in Lightning Launcher were not working anymore, so I had to set them up again.
Dec.13Also, I had noticed earlier that sometimes my bluetooth headset does not connect properly to my phone. That is, it shows it is connected, but the audio still comes through the phone instead of the headset. I found that when I went to the bluetooth headset profile and disabled and re-enabled the “Phone audio” profile, it was working again.
    Dec.15Installed Google Drive. Uninstalled utter!
Dec.16Updated Any.do, Google Calendar. Had to uninstall Amazon appstore and reinstall to make room for updating these apps. Uninstalled Timescape, Play on Device.
Dec.17Installed Max Magnifier. As documented here, it is the best magnifying app I looked at so far. However, it causes a FC on my Xperia Mini when I use the slide bar (or pinch to zoom) to adjust the zoom. Anyway, I can still use it as long as I select the desired zoom and don’t do a gradual change to the zoom. Anyway, uninstalled as I don’t need it now. Same developer has an interesting app called Tool Box (free). I wanted to try some of the functions, but I am having storage problems. sigh. Based on these storage problems, looks like I should reflash a new ROM. I’ve been wanting to do this, but I prefer to be able to do it on my own terms, not because I have to.
Dec.20Decided to redo the screen protector but it seems the one which was currently on there had a sticky back, so removing it made it unusable. I put on a new one from ScreenGuard which is not sticky.
Dec.25To load a custom ROM, I had to ensure the bootloader was unlocked by following instructions on this page. In general, first following instructions from here.
Dec.26Couldn’t get “Serenity” to load, so instead, installed Jelly Bean (CyanogenMod 10). Trying to follow why I can’t install Serenity on this thread. Panorama cameria is not working on this version. After Google Apps and apps below, 197 MB Free. So far, installed

Dec.27Unfortunately my favorite alarm app Colorful Alarm does not allow me to pick my own alarm sound under CM10. I opted to buy Electric Dawn which is similar in concept but does not have quite all the same features I have in Colorful Alarm.
Dec.28Got tired of Gallery not showing my pics from Picasaweb. I found “this link”http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-rooting-roms-hacks/220830-jelly-bean-4-2-camera.html to load a new Gallery and it works! Unfortunately, my camera stopped working. I found this link for a Jellybean camera but it didn’t fix the problem. Seems like I should abandon this for a while to see if a CM10 stable version will fix this problem. In the meantime, I found a very nice gallery app (SemcAlbum.apk) ported from Sony Xperia T which shows your pics on a map or globe.
Dec.28Google Now which is standard as part of Google Search as of Android 4.1 (Jellybean) is pretty cool. I only have upgraded to Jelleybean on my phone through alpha version of CyanogenMod for my phone Sony Xperia Mini. My Toshiba tablet was recently upgraded, too, and through it, I found out that Google Now can support looking through Amazon Kindle, Amazon MP3, Chrome, Hotmail, MX Player, My Tracks, Outlook, Google Play Books and Movies, Quickoffice, Rdio, Translate, and Yelp, in addition to Apps, Browser, and People. There could be others as well.
Dec.28Discovered the problem to one of my annoyances with CM10. My favorite alarm app Colorful Alarm stopped working. It turns out the CM10 install did not include a default app for mp3 files, so whenever I picked my own mp3 file for the alarm sound, Colorful Alarm would return a “not supported file” error message. In the meantime, I downloaded a paid app Electric Dawn which has similar functionality, but Colorful Alarm suits my needs better. I provided suggestions to Electric Dawn though.
Dec.28I’m still getting “insufficient storage available” when trying to install apps. Seems to happen when I have less than 50MB free on my phone’s memory. Uninstalled FrameMe and updated Link2SD. Installed SkyDrive.
Dec.29Unfortunately while using navigation, it rebooted. Fortunately Google Now provided an easy way to re-initiate navigation.
Dec.31Installed Ship-rack. Uninstalled Electric Dawn, Album. Installed Swype Beta.

Dec.13The browser icon seemed to have been messed up in Lightning Launcher. Refreshing the apps in Lightning Launcher seems to have cleared it up.
    Dec.17Installed FlashPlayer for ICS.
Dec.18Installed SnapKeys keyboard. Interesting concept. I like it better than a thumb keyboard.
Dec.20Updated Skype, Pocket, Google+, Google Translate, Google Calendar, GasBuddy, Yahoo Weather, Gmail, Weather Channel, YouTube, GPS Status, Mini Info Classic, Maps, Street View, Rain Alarm, Kindle. Installed utter!
Dec.21Installed Transkun, All英和辞書 English Japanese (ILHWAN CHO), English-Japanese Dictionary (Naver)
Dec.27Updated Lightning Launcher. Discovered it sometimes freezes.

    PC
Dec.08I noticed the AverMedia QuickPlay video adapter I was using is missing a pin in the VGA plug. Not sure if it is related, but doesn’t seem to work anymore. The SCART adapter is also slightly bent at the bottom, but it can still be plugged into a TV.
Dec.18Tried to use fax capability on the Tablet PC, but it didn’t work. Received “fax server information cannot be retrieved”.
Dec.18Installed HelloFax as a Chrome app. However, you can only get 5 pages free with HelloFax.
Dec.20The fan on the Sony VAIO VPC-J113FX/B all in one desktop from two years ago is driving me crazy. I don’t normally use this computer but when I am in the room, the noise from the fan annoys me. Perhaps the level of the noise is not as bad as other desktops, but it’s a whirring noise so it’s not consistent in its noise level. I saw some suggestions to alter the fan settings in the BIOS but there are no fan settings, but I found Sony updated the BIOShere. Unfortunately, this BIOS does not allow any configuration of the fan. I’ll just have to see if it really decreases the sound of the fan or not.
Update: Grrr… Not really impressed with this update. I’ve adjusted the power settings so the hard drive turns off after 8 minutes. I don’t know if it was related to the BIOS update or just the fact I am putting the hard drive to sleep after 8 minutes, but this quiets the computer’s fan.
Dec.21On the MediaPC, I added the capability to automatically create a subtitle file from the closed caption text by using CC Extractor and setting the “Post Download Command” to ’”C:\Program Files\CCExtractor\ccextractorwin.exe” -2 -out=srt “mpeg”’. There are supposed to be percent signs before and after mpeg but within the double quotes, but the text processing of 43T have filtered them out. Most likely, it will also work without the mpeg parameter as the “Post Download Command” is supposed to automatically amend the mpeg filename if no parameters are specified.
Dec.21I’ve set up MediaPC to be the IVSMagic server again, but I’ve had to start it as an application instead of as a service.
Dec.21Had problems sending a show from MediaPC. It kept saying that the show was not found even after a refresh. Turns out the problem is related to the time offset needing to be resynched with the computer and ReplayTV.
Dec.23One of the plugins for XBMC stopped working. It seems one solution is to upgrade XBMC (not the plugin). Also, I upgraded to SplashTop Streamer 2. There seems to be a lag at least from my older computers. I’ll need to see if there’s anything which can improve the lag. I also may try TeamViewer. Currently use LogMeIn for most of my desktop monitoring/controlling functionality, though. SplashTop Streamer does not work with fullscreen mode of XBMC. However, TeamViewer does. TeamViewer seemed to also work with video but froze. Not sure if that was just a freak problem or it really doesn’t support video well. TeamViewer doesn’t seem to support audio though while SplashTop Streamer does. Actually, spoke too soon. TeamViewer also does not seem to work well with XBMC fullscreen mode.
Dec.24I was able to create subtitle files from closed caption recording for all videos in a directory using the following command: M:\ReplayTV\Local_Guide>for %i in (x.mpg) do “C:\Program Files\CCExtractor\ccextractorwin.exe” -2 -out=srt “%i”, where there is a percent sign before each occurrence before the letter i and an asterisk prior to ”.mpeg” rather than the letter x. The same can be done by using two consecutive percent signs in the batch file instead of a single percent sign.

    Mom’s ThinkPad
Dec.13DVD-RW drive arrived. I installed it. Unfortunately since I left my precision screwdriver set at my mom’s, I was not able to attach the bracket with both screws but one screw.

    Mom’s PC
Dec.24Upgraded XBMC on my mom’s computer. Also installed TeamViewer.

    Mom’s Android
Dec.13Phone from Republic Wireless is supposed to arrive today.
Dec.14In order to have voice mail handled by Google voice, I had to dial *28(GV number) to forward voicemail to Google voice. Unfortunately, call filtering/screening doesn’t seem to be working. Have posted a question on their forum. Changed her ringtone to “Hangout” which is at least a rather pleasant tone. Update: Can have the same effect as Call Filter by using Android contact option to direct call immediately to voice mail and set up a Spam contact with all spam phone #s added to that contact.
Dec.14Installed ADW Launcher. Default launcher had a limitation that only apps could be in the dock bar, not shortcuts, folders, etc.
Dec.15Phone internal memory down to 18MB. I uninstalled the update to Facebook and saved 24MB. I also uninstalled the updates to Google Music, Google Books, and Google Movies.
Dec.15By the way, I have noticed that periodically, the phone goes into silent mode automatically. I don’t know if it is due to the silent phone widget or not.
Dec.16I used Android Screen Capture to capture the home screen on my mom’s phone and posted here. At first it didn’t seem to work but I had two Android sdk’s installed on my computer under Program Files: one under Android and one under android-sdk-windows. Seems like the one under Android was more recent, so I pointed Android Screen Capture there and everything started to work.
Dec.20Installed a screen protector with a product by ScreenGuard. Installed 32GB SD card. The back plate is plastic but the phone is supposed to be waterproof. To remove the back plate, unlock at bottom, then pry from bottom. Putting back the back plate is the opposite. For reference: battery HF5X.
Dec.25Used instructions from here to root the phone. First, though, turned phone on, then used adb devices to ensure adb can find the device. Then adb remount to have access to the device. Remount didn’t work, but turns out I don’t need to do it anyway. Phone is now rooted.
Dec.31Installed Link2SD. Moved Amazon Appstore, Skype, and Swype Beta to SD card. Uninstalled and reinstalled Maps, Google+ so they could be moved to the SD card. Installed CallFilter which seems to work now, but I already have an alternate solution described above.

    November 2012
    Android
Nov.01Installed Quadrant Standard Edition for measuring performance capabilities of my phone. Results are: 1007 (total), 1706 (CPU), 1109 (Memory), 594 (IO), 368 (2D), 1259 (3D). Generally a 10% improvement than my first run because I did this run after restarting the phone. To install Quadrant Standard Edition, I had to uninstall a few apps include My Tracker. I am not too surprised at the performance of my phone due to the age of my phone. Note that I ran the app with Screebl turned off. Also, one time I had to force stop QSE when it didn’t seem to want to run the tests. Ran again later with QSE moved to the SD card: 1256 (total), 1737 (CPU), 1250 (Memory), 873 (IO), 885 (2D), 1535 (3D). It occurred to me that I might have run it too soon after bootup originally so the CPU was still handling bootup activities.
Nov.15I got tired that Gmail Notifier did not take me to Gmail when clicking on the notification, so I bought the Gmail Label Notifier for $0.99 in the Android Market.
Nov.16For some strange reason, when I was out and about, I couldn’t get data for my phone from AT&T. After getting home, I did some research and found APN settings different than what I had. I wonder why it seemed to have stopped all of a sudden or was the timing just coincidental? Anyway, here are the new settings: Name: AT&T APN: wap.cingular, Proxy: blank, Port: blank, Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, Password: CINGULAR1, Server: blank, MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com, MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com, MMS Port: 80, MCC: 310, MNC: 410, APN Type: blank
Nov.16Since I have some problems with my Off button on my phone, I’ve decided to download the Shutdown app and Screen off app. The Screen off app also allows some animation, like the CRT/old TV which used to be available on Android, but doesn’t seem available anymore. It also allows an animation sound, so I picked one of them which sounds like something being turned off, although it’s only the Screen off app. Too bad the Shutdown app doesn’t have the same animation and sound.
Nov.17Installed SwipePad which allows a hot spot to defined on a screen which can bring up selected apps. Since I often want to check GPS signals, I selected GPS Status as one of the apps. Another one is Screebl Pro since I may want to turn that on/off at any time. Finally, I’ve added Screen Off and Shutdown since my off button is not always working properly. Thus, I can easily get to these apps from any app and not have to go back to the home screen first.
Nov.26Installed Dragon Mobile Assistant v1.01. Uninstalled Chrome to make room. Updated Link2SD. However, even updated version does not allow me to move Dragon (or Play Store) to SD card. Uninstalled FB and “Friends” pre-installed apps to make room in memory.

    PC
Nov.07Set up “Do not track” request on my Chrome browser setting. With version 23, you can go into Settings -> Show advanced settings -> Send a ‘Do Not Track’ request with your browsing traffic. I should do this for all my PCs.
Nov.16Setting up the new Media Room PC as the old one died. Just placing the old hard drive in the new one seemed to have done the trick. Windows Activation had a problem, but unfortunately, I forgot to do it within 3 days, so now it’s telling me it’s not valid. Downloaded software referenced by SevenForums, but unfortunately, it had a lot of bloatware, and took a while to remove it all. I then used Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder as referenced by about.com, which still had some bloatware but not much and at least they were known software such as AVG. I used the key not from the original hardware, but the one I had on this PC as I might have accidentally used the one from the original hard drive one of my mom’s computers. To activate, I went to Computer -> Properties -> Scrolled down to the bottom to activate windows. Even after activating, it complained, but perhaps I didn’t let the activation process run long enough after rebooting. Anyway, all seems fine. I also had 3+ months worth of antivirus definitions to load. Seemed to take a while. And now loading Windows updates. Activated Windows 7 product key through their voice service.

    Mom’s Android
Nov.19My last experience trying to help my mom with her computer convinced me that a Smart Phone for her would help if it has Skype video capabilities, but paying exta for a data plan would be a bit pricey. I finally decided that Republic Wireless at $19 per month is a good deal, although they were still in private beta. No sooner than I signed up for private beta that they have come out of private beta. Of course, now that I’ve also decided that a notebook computer is a good set up for her, I could also get her a webcam for her old notebook, but the Smart Phone would be more portable. In addition, her old notebook can only run on AC power as the battery doesn’t hold a charge anymore.
Nov.20Be prepared to load my mom’s Android phone. Unfortunately, so far, the Motorola Defy XT is not rootable which prevents me from taking advantage of some of the apps:
    1. Lightning Launcher
    2. MCG PhoneWidgetWith new layout, needed anymore?
    3. Lookout Security and Antivirus
    4. LBE Privacy Guard (root)

    36. Mini Info Classic
    37. Google Voice
    38. Call Filter
    39. Blink Can’t seem to control the LED

    Mom’s PC
Nov.08Not really her PC, but we bought a cable modem at Best Buy for #63 including tax to replace the Comcast modem. Rental fee is $7 per month, so this new model will pay for itself in 9 months. I had to call Comcast to get them to recognize the new modem (by the MAC address). Unfortunately, (1) I tried chat first on the Comcast website and the person on chat gave me wrong information, (2) I was accidentally disconnected with the person I had on the phone originally, and I thought she would call me back, but she didn’t… But the next person was able to help me and the Internet is working with the new modem.
Nov.16For some reason, my mom’s computer wouldn’t start up properly. Could have to do more with something electrical than the computer itself. It started ok this morning. Will need to check out possible causes. When I talked to her, the symptom was similar to that from Oct. 28. I’m not sure what the cause was, but she was able to use the Windows 7 Repair DVD. It said that it was not able to make the repairs, but then it was able to boot up. I need to see if I can figure out a different set up for mom. Too bad the Mini X Plus did not work out.
Nov.16Not sure where to put this one, but her IP camera stopped working. At any rate, the wireless stopped working on this one, and it would be more convenient for her to have a smart phone for being able to show me what is going on.
Nov.18Since my mom is having problems with her PC, one option is to resurrect her old ThinkPad G41. It is old but it has two 1.5Ghz processors so maybe it will be ok. It was running XP, and I installed XBMC and seems to be ok, so I will try to upgrade it to Windows 7. I tried installing Windows 7 with the original drive attached as a USB drive, but I forgot to clear the hard drive password, so Windows set up would freeze. After figuring that out, seems to install ok. When installing the audio driver for the ThinkPad G41, I had to use compatability mode. It seemed to install ok but at boot up, I got a “Dsndup Error No Adi Codec Driver” error. Also, for some reason, XBMC on the Windows 7 installation had problems, too.
Nov.18Seems like XBMC cannot run under the generic “Standard VGA” driver and Intel did not provide a Windows 7 driver for the 852GM chipset. Ugh. Would be between a rock and a hard place except that I am considering getting a docking station anyway which would have its own video card. But I wonder how I got my other computers to work with Windows 7.
    Nov.19Software to be installed:
    1. Windows Updates
    2. Chrome
    3. Windows Live
    4. Skype
    5. LogMeIn
    6. Splashtop Client/Server
    7. DVarchive
    8. SlingPlayer
    9. Microsoft Office
    10. Adobe Reader
    11. Antivirus/Firewall
    12. ATT Network Client
    13. Japanese wallpaper
    14. DVD-RW drive
    15. ULead Movie Factory
    16. Enable volume keys on ThinkPad
    17. Enable TrackPoint scrolling on ThinkPad (Somehow enabled itself)
    18. Canon Multipass 390 print driver
    19. Fujitsu ScanSnap software
    20. Set system restore
Nov.21I realized there may be a video lag with a USB connected monitor. I am trying to see if the instructions here help with getting a working video adapter for Windows 7. Hooray! This works!! Now I have a usable video graphics card with hardware acceleration and XBMC has no problems with it!
Nov.21Looks like its optical drive tray is not the same as Ultrabay. Found a DVD RW drive here from gbrc2010 for $19.
Nov.261GB memory arrived, so now computer has total of 1.5GB.

    Mom’s ReplayTV
Nov.01Finally, some progress… When ReplayTV said they were going to withdraw their electric program guide (EPG) service, some people sprang into action and came up with their own paid service. Fortunately to most, ReplayTV decided to keep running the service, so this other paid service became, more or less, obsolete. However, connecting to their service loaded a whole bunch of updated IR codes. This looks promising. If it works out, I’ll owe Laho a donation! Update: Everything seems to be working well. Whew! Also, since she was told she can have up to 3 digital cable boxes free, perhaps we can use two for that TV. One dedicated to the ReplayTV device and one to the TV, so that she can record one show while watching another.
Nov.02I set up two digital boxes at her TV, so she can record one show while watching another. Since she only has a total of two digital boxes, that means all the 3 TVs can only be tuned into the same channel (while the ReplayTV has its own box for recording). I don’t think it should be a limitation though that she cannot watch different channels on the different TVs at the same time.
Nov.08Not ReplayTV related, but the video quality is very good going into ReplayTV. The one going directly to the TV is not as good but I am splitting that signal to 3 TVs. I bought a new Viewsonic Coax 3-way splitter VS3WDS and it seems a little better.
Nov.09Strangely, DVArchive has errors at times downloading from ReplayTV.

    Mom’s Tablet

Nov.03Installed ClockSync. I was trying to test out whether it works for daylight savings, too. Apparently it does, but I had difficulty figuring out when it adjusted the time. Ideally, when one goes to bed at night and have the alarm set the next morning, the time will get adjusted in time for the alarm.
    Nov.05Installed Quadrant Standard Edition. Result is: 2042 (total), 2137 (CPU), 2634 (Memory), 3124 (IO), 410 (2D), 1906 (3D).
Nov.09I’m a glutton for punishment. I think I am going to reload the tablet to upgrade the ROM and hopefully fix the strange wifi problem. Currently loaded software are .nomedia Manager, Adobe Flash Player 10.3, Adobe Reader, Any.Do, (Amazon) Appstore, Astro (file manager), Battery Widget Z, CBS News, ClockSync, Convertr, (Google) Earth, ES File Explorer, Explorer, Flipboard, fring, GasBuddy, GO Keyboard, GO Keyboard Pad plugin, GO Keyboard Pink Theme, GO Keyboard Pink theme (Pad), Google Play Store, Google Search, Google Voice, Google+, Hotmail, Japanese for GO Keyboard, Jeannie, life.contacts, Life360, Lightning Launcher, LLW App Widget, LLW Simple Pager, Lookout, Maps, Meteor Blitz, Mini Info, MIUI Analog Clock, MoboPlayer Codec for ARM V7, MX Player, MX Player Codec (ARMv7), NBC News, Netflix, Nomedia, Pageonce Travel, Pocket, Quadrant Standard, Rain Alarm, ROM Manager, Root Explorer, Shiprack, Skype, Speed Test, Splashtop Remote, Street View, Superuser, TalkBack, Tango, The Weather Channel, Thumb Keyboard 4, TimeZone Fixer, Titanium Backup, Translate, TV Guide, UPnPlay, VNC server, Voice Search, (Yahoo) Weather, XBMC, XBMC Remote, Xfinity TV, YouTube.
    Nov.09Steps to upgrade.
    1. First upgrade to Bootloader 1.2 as described here.
    2. NV Flash guide can be found here
    3. Install CWM 5.5.0.4 as described here
    4. Install Smooth Bean ROM found here.
    5. Unfortunately XBMC was flickering under this ROM. Might be XBMC’s fault since it is only alpha, but it is a deal breaker, so I am trying the ICS found here
Nov.10Went back to the Smooth Bean. However, having trouble with Flash on a browser since technically it is not supported anymore. For Dolphin, there is a way to allow Dolphin to set your preference by deleting the preferences file as described here.
Nov.10Argh. After almost completion of setting up the tablet, I felt the performance of Flash on this version was not acceptable… since most of the videos she watches are from websites which use Flash. Ugh… So now back to Cyanogenmod 7 (Gingerbread) but since I’ve upgraded to Bootloader 1.2, I’ve had to resort to alternative source of Cyanogenmod here
Nov.10Quadrant Standard Edition run while installing Cyanogen 7.1. Details are: Installed Quadrant Standard Edition for measuring performance capabilities of my phone. Results are: 1961 (total), 2287 (CPU), 2615 (Memory), 2944 (IO), 500 (2D), 1457 (3D).
Nov.10Finally was able to complete the re-load of the tablet. The new CyanogenMod ROM I used only supports 120dpi, but it was easy enough to get Build Prop editor from Android Market to change the setting to 160. 120 results in fonts which are rather small. The advantages of CyanogenMod 7 is that it runs Flash smoothly, it runs XBMC, and actually, seemed rather fast. The advantages of the other ROMs is that they support Google Now, the copy/paste features seem more robust, the running apps view shows the last known screenshot for each app, and the onscreen keyboard doesn’t appear when using an external keyboard. Perhaps there is a way to do this in Gingerbread, but I haven’t figured that out yet. I didn’t get a chance to confirm that HDMI out works but it did work on the previous CyanogenMod version I used.
Nov.26Consider installing a piano app, such as:
  • Real Piano
  • Musical Piano Free
  • My Piano

  • October 2012
    Android
Oct.04For some reason, current version of Skype I had installed did not seem to connect anymore. Installing latest version seemed to also freeze on splash screen. Went to older version and it worked ok.
Oct.11For some reason, offline maps do not work for Japan. Seems like you need to go back to Maps 6.8 where there was the Labs version of cached maps. Fortunately, I was able to find a 6.8 version, reloaded, and now I have cached maps for Japan. Other people have complained about it, but I have not seen any response from Google why it isn’t working.
Oct.12Set up bluetooth tethering capability from the phone using PDANet. Did this by removing the bluetooth pairing with the phone, turning on bluetooth discovery on the phone from PDANet, pairing the device, and the correct drivers are automatically loaded. To connect, go to bluetooth control panel for the device and one option will be to connect to the Internet.
Oct.12Installed Noozy which is a Zune-like media player. It’s sort of meh. Uninstalled.
    Oct.14Installed Aedict.
Oct.22Learned that not all earphone/microphone plugs are compatible. Sony Xperia models use the OMTP standard while others use CTIA. Looks like the 2012 Sony Xperias are moving to the CTIA standard.
Oct.24Finally installed Screebl which I had previously gotten as one of the Amazon’s Free Apps of the Day. It’s a pretty neat app where it uses your phone’s orientation to figure out if you are looking at your screen or not, as we typically hold the phone the same way when using our phones. By doing this, we can extend the timeout when we are looking at the phone instead of getting the annoying screen lock. In addition, we can set the timeout time to something very short when the phone is not in a position we typically use to look at the phone. Thus overall, this could save some on battery life as usually the display is the biggest drain on the battery.
Oct.30I’ve had problems with my phone for a couple of weeks (possibly due to a fall) where the shutdown question would sporadically pop up and when I wanted to black out the screen, it would instead show the shutdown question. I finally decided to open the back up, use a precision screw driver to see if I could loosen up the off button, and it seems to be working much better now.

    PC
Oct.02For my SCART video adapter, it needs to be set on “Input” when the purpose is to display something on the TV.
Oct.04x10 from family room does not turn on the family room light. However, x10 from dining room seems to cover front, bedroom, and family room.
Oct.06Not that I would condone any type of piracy but there are many services which convert an Internet video into an mp3 file, such as this one.
Oct.23Received the wireless 802.11b/g/n nano USB adapter I ordered. I couldn’t use Windows 7 standard drivers, but had to download the driver from here. Even the included CD didn’t seem to work. Why would I want an extra wireless adapter on my notebook computer which already has one? So I can set the second one up as an ad hoc wireless network to allow my phone to connect to it while my notebook is connected to a wireless network. This is handy where a hotel or some place allows wifi but not for an unlimited number of devices. I could do it the other way around to let my phone connect to the network and use a tool like PDANet to allow my computer to connect to the Internet, but I assume this would slow down the bandwidth speed on my PC. Since I may use my PC for Skype or streaming video. The driver installation caused my screen to black out a few times which was a bit unnerving…

    Mom’s PC
Oct.07For some reason, my mom’s Internet stopped working. I should have asked the technician why… but it’s up and running now. She has a new IP address but at least they didn’t have to change the model (with all of its settings). Not related to this, but her PC in her bedroom seems to have been damaged and Windows wants the installation CD to be inserted, so I need to send that to her. In addition, Comcast went to all digital so her analog set up didn’t work anymore. The technician set up the digital receivers, but he would not touch the ReplayTV. In addition, Comcast provides two of the digital receivers for free, so I told him my mom does not need the third one. She probably doesn’t need the second one as well except for the fact that he already hooked up the digital receiver in the guest bedroom by the time I called. Her IP address was changed to 66.229.xxx.xxx.
Oct.28For some reason, her PC was not able to boot up. I used repair on the Windows DVD and everything is ok.
Oct.30I’m not sure where to put this one, but my mom seems to be getting tired of Netflix. There’s not a lot of good movie choices for streaming. I have just signed up for Amazon Prime. Since they have partnered with Epix, they do have some good movies. I’ll set that up for my mom.
Oct.31Installed Amazon, Hulu, and Free Cable XBMC plugins.
Oct.31A TDK DVD-R we burned last year seems to have problems. This is strange. I wonder if there are any quality problems with TDK media. Here is a link which as reviews on blank media. Seems like TDK has stopped making media themselves and has been outsourcing. Worth while to check the media ID. It looks like I should look to another brand for blank DVDs.

    Mom’s Tablet
Oct.28For some reason, it lost wifi connection. In fact, it seems to be losing wifi connection regularly. At a minimum, upon boot up, it doesn’t seem to connect automatically. This would give one reason to go ahead and upgrade the ROM on her tablet.
Oct.29I was able to install XBMC and everything seems to be ok. In fact, her gTablet seems to run better than the Mini XPlus, which is perhaps not too much of a surprise.
Oct.31Bought Root Explorer for my mom’s tablet.
Oct.31Installed Amazon, Hulu, and Free Cable XBMC plugins. However, Hulu plugin only seems to loop through commercials, and I get an error when trying to play something from Amazon.

    Mom’s ReplayTV
Oct.28Unfortunately, the out to TV coax jack has been broken. Also, one of the composite audio out (red) has also been broken. At any rate, she has Comcast Digital now, with a DTA30 digital cable box. I need to find the right remote TV control codes to allow the ReplayTV to change it. I may have to load a custom file as described here
Oct.30Hooked up the RCA Compact RF Modulator CRF907R. This allows two video feeds in to the TV, so I can have both the digital cable TV box and ReplayTV feed into the single coax feed of the TV. If the ReplayTV is not on, the signal from the digital cable box will be used.
Oct.31Found some instructions to try to load a new IR code file to ReplayTV here. Have aleady downloaded a file onto my mom’s computer. Another approach is described here but does not include the RID file for DTA30.
Oct.31Apparently, no love for me. The writing directly to the ReplayTV hard drive didn’t seem to work. I used RTV Explorer instead of extract_rtv but RTV Explorer uses extract_rtv, so the results should be the same. One problem is that I don’t know if the IR blaster is working. I know the IR blaster was working in Dallas, but that doesn’t mean it’s still working or that the IR feed from my mom’s ReplayTV is working. Then when I tried the bootable CD, my ThinkPad is apparently newer than the CD so the Linux drivers for my network cards were not supported at that time. I can try my mom’s computer in her bedroom since it is an older computer. My last resort may be to install WiRNS on her computer to be able to execute shell commands remotely.

    Mini XPlus Android Device
Oct.24Received the “Mini XPlus” which is my thought for my mom to be able to have a home entertainment system and “computer” backup. It only cost $78 but my mom will be able to use it to browse the Internet, check e-mail, check weather, and just as importantly, as a home entertainment center with access to Netflix and her home media. I found the Mini XPlus for cheaper price of around $59, but it seemed like it came with a wireless mouse instead of a remote and I wanted the remote. It wasn’t clear if all the cables came with it, so I opted to buy it from the place selling it for $78.
Oct.25Was able to root the device following the comments here. It basically involves using the USB cable for power in the USB OTG port and running a RunMe.bat file while a USB mouse is plugged in the USB host port. I had to update my computer with A10 drivers which I found here.
Oct.25Trying to get xbmc running but it’s very slow. Found references that the player doesn’t work well with the Allwinner A10 processor. There was a suggestion to use an external player like MX Player as described here and provided a link to here. Found a sample playercorefactory.xml here. Seems like the RK3066 Rockchip chips have no problems with the XBMC internal player… Now I find out! Someone wrote instructions about how to use Supercharger on Allwinner devices here.
Oct.25Netflix app just seemed to close immediately after launching. I read where Netflix 1.8.1 is able to run on Mini XPlus, so I was able to find that version somewhere for download and it seems to work ok.
Oct.25Since the Mini XPlus does not have an off button, installed Shutdown app which shuts down the app. The device is still “on” from the point of view the red LED is on, but with it shut down, the processor is not churning, thus saving on electricity. Just as importantly, the device seems to run rather hot, so it seems to me a good idea to shut the device down when not in use. Shutdown requires a rooted device, which was no problem based on the ability to root the instructions as described above.
Oct.25Installed Firefox and Dolphin (with Jetpack). I’m disappointed in the default browser’s performance on this device, so I’m looking for other options. Android Market did not let me install Chrome saying it was not compatible.
Oct.29The bandwidth speed seems much better at my mom’s condo, which may be a bad indication for my Verizon wireless router at home. At any rate, I decided not to return to Mini XPlus, although I am not sure what role it plays at the moment.

    September 2012
    Android
Sep.03Installed AutoRap, Songify, and Talking Tom to my phone. Used Link2SD to install on SD when possible. Link2SD doesn’t seem to install as much to the SD card as I thought it used to under Gingerbread but I don’t have any data for actual comparison. AutoRap is huge, though, requiring about 100MB.
Sep.03I don’t know when it started but I noticed clicking on the Gmail Notifier notification does not take me to Gmail. Argh.
    Sep.17Installed Maluuba

    Tablet
Sep.03Installed AutoRap and Songify, but there seems to be a mic issue as it is not picking up my voice.
Sep.06Formatted an external hard drive to exFat format. Used a micro USB adapter and plugged into my tablet. Was able to play movie using XBMC which was on the hard drive.
Sep.15Installed Unified Remote on the tablet, although since I did not have Internet connection for my tablet, I sideloaded the app.
Sep.16Installed PDANet, again through sideloading the app. The normal PDANet did not appear in Google Play, only the PDANet for Tablets which assumes that you are trying to get Internet access for your phone. In this case, I have Internet access on the tablet and want to share it with my PC. Since I had previously paired my tablet with my PC, I had to remove the pairing, so that when I enabled Bluetooth DUN using PDANet, all the right bluetooth drivers were installed for the device. Now I am able to have Internet connection for my tablet and PC at the same time, although some applications do not seem to recognize that I have an Internet connection on my PC. Internet speed on tablet: 0.86Mbps/1.0Mbps, on computer: 0.76Mbps/0.67Mbps.
    Sep.16Installed Yelp
    Sep.17Installed Maluuba
Sep.18Got tired of having to stretch my thumbs across the screen to type. Installed Go Keyboard and the Japanese for Go Keyboard. I had to sideload the Japanese language plugin as for some reason, it did not appear in Google Play for the tablet.
Sep.26Now that IVSMagic is loaded on the computer in the study, it seems that it shuts itself down every once in a while and I have to manually start it again.

    PC
Sep.04Argh. The PC upstairs finally did die… Hard drive is ok though.
Sep.04Had to install IVSMagic on a different computer. Argh. Was I really that much smarter when I installed it initially. This is what I had to do to set it up. I had to install in its own directory C:\IVSmagic instead of under C:\Program Files (x86) even though I found people saying that modifying the line in PHP.ini would allow installing in the standard programs directory. I also had to modify all @@ entries in the conf file and make sure all the settings in ini and conf were correct, which I could get from the old hard drive. Finally, I copied the db file from the db directory.
Sep.06Since the “Media” PC died, this was also where I was backing up data. I had to set up SyncToy to run against one of the NAS directly.
Sep.18x10 stopped working in the house. I thought it was the adapter, but turned out to be the 2nd clock controller.

    August 2012
    Android
Aug.11Finally upgraded to Android 4.0. I had problems with the Flashtool. First, the Flashtool said to use the Return button but on the Xperia Mini, it is the Volume Up button. Secondly, I was trying to power the device on, but I was simply supposed to hold down the Volume Down button (with the device off) when plugging it back into my computer. After upgrading, the phone was rather sluggish. Also, I noticed I couldn’t turn bluetooth on and the screen was black when trying to use the camera. However, resetting the phone data was able to fix all that.
Aug.12Had problems getting paired with my computer. At first, I didn’t notice, but upon using Unified Remote, it lost connection to the computer. Tried re-pairing many times to try to get the headset connection working, but never did seem to get it to work.
Aug.18Decided I needed to use Link2SD to make more room for apps as the default move to SD function in Android does not cover all apps. I found out that I needed to partition my SD card which I did with the Mini Tool Partition Wizard. I also received the error message “[INSTALL-FAILED-INVALID-INSTALL-LOCATION” when I tried to move an app to the SD card, but the reason was that the app was a system app. In order to move a system app, I need to delete it and install it again as a non-system app.
Aug.20Was trying to download offline maps, but kept getting an error. Turns out the memory card was out of space (but error message did not state that, only stating it failed).
Aug.21Upgraded the memory card to the Xperia x10 to 32GB. Had to let the phone format the SD card.
Aug.23Installed LBE Privacy Guard. I like the ICQ Uh-oh sound as a notification sound, but it was too loud. Used Ring Maker app to tone down the volume by setting a fade out of 1 second.
Aug.29Phone was upgraded. I didn’t document the exact details of the previous version. Now, it is Android 4.0.4, Baseband version 8×55A-AAABQOAZM-203028G-72, Kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf BuildUser@BuildHost#1, Build number 4.1.B.0.431
Aug.30Sony replaced life.contacts with Top Contacts. I think I like life.contacts better. Decided I did like life.contacts better, so I’ll uninstall Top Contacts.

    Tablet
Aug.17Received my USB to micro USB adapter so I could try plugging in an external hard drive to my Excite tablet. However, my hard drive was formatted NTFS instead of FAT32, so it doesn’t work. I’ll need to reformat the drive to test it out, but then I’ll need to find a place to copy all the data I have on this external drive.
Aug.17Also received the HDMI cable I ordered but ordered the wrong one. Sigh. I needed a micro HDMI cable, not a mini. Also, received the dock/stand for the tablet, but it doesn’t come with its own separate power cable, so you have to reuse the one which came with the tablet. This is a bit inconvenience when you want to put the stand in a semi-permanent spot and hide the power cable. Now you have to unplug it every time you want to travel with the tablet.
Aug.17Put on the screen protector for the tablet. Used a product called “ScreenGUARD”. I’m not so sure about it. Unfortunately, had more difficulties with this screen protector than the one I got for my mom’s gTablet. In addition, some of the spots on the tablet are difficult to press now.
    Aug.18Upgraded XBMC to 7/20 version.
Aug.23Argh. Where did I put that newly bought 32GB memory card? Ah, found it!
Aug.31Noticed some bandwidth problems on the tablet. Even trying Speedtest would stop during the middle of testing. After shutting down and starting up, seemed to be ok. Upgraded XBMC nightly build. First tried non-Neon version, but this tablet can support the Neon version. Was able to get 1Channel working after uninstalling everything then starting up again.

jimrin has gotten 45 cheers on this goal.
