This Frieda Kahlo painting more or less sums it up for me.

Love without the fear of the pain that someone else’s actions may cause you. To love them even though they do not meet your expectations of who you think that person is to you. It is to know that you are strong enough to deal with hurt or pain as and when it comes. To trust them by first being able to trust yourself to do the right thing.
