Well, I went to court and got the court order for changing my name. Yay! Now this week, I have to go down to the Social Security Center and apply for a new SSN card, then I’ll be there. Of course, then I have to send my new name to a gazillion different places to get updated.

Well, today I went down to the filing office and filed my application for $289. That doesn’t even count the other costs that’ll be involved like new drivers license, social security card, etc.

My hearing is scheduled February 27th at 3pm. So that’s a couple weeks from now. Here we go!

Changing My Name (Legally) 10 months ago

I’ve never cared for my name. I think it’s pretty, but way too common. I’ve never liked the attitudes of other people that I’ve met who share my name and I certainly don’t like the general image that my name projects. In my mind, my name belongs to a shallow ditz and I want a name that’s unique and more fitting to my personality and lifestyle.

I told my parents that I want to legally change my name yesterday. Although my mother once mentioned many years ago that she wished she had named me something different, she had acted shocked and somewhat negative when I mentioned changing my name. She seemed to think that my new name choice was weird and even went so far as to say, “Why *? If you’re going to change your name, why not change it to *“It actually kind of upset me and so I gave her a call today and talked to her a little more. Although I wouldn’t say that she’s pleased, she pretty much said that I’m an adult so can do whatever I want (obviously) and she’s support me. Although, in her own words, I’ll always be Amber to her.

I’m 23 and have lived on my own since I was 19 so getting it changed legally really isn’t a problem. My only concern is with my credit and job history. I have pretty good credit and don’t look foward to any of the headaches dealing with a name change versus what’s on my reports, and I’m hoping to move out of state next year so it may look odd to new employers with having a totally different name.

I’m changing my entire name. I’m incorporating my current first name into a modified version for my last name, which I think sounds nice and has a different but lovely meaning. My middle name will be new, as my current middle name Nicole is also dull to me. If I’m going to go for it, might as go the whole way! :)
