Out along the “loneliest road in America” in the Lahontan Valley between the Black Rock Desert and Death Valley once stood a cottonwood. Over the last 30 years, people had come to throw shoes over its long sweeping branches. Along this lonely road, with very little to see but pastoral panoramas gone boring, visitors came and stopped, to view and maybe to pay tribute, sharing in and helping create a monument, art. I just read, just before the new year someone murdered the tree.
