I used to say “I Love You” to my first boyfriend all the time. That was my sophomore year in high school, when I thought that all you needed for a good relationship was a phone call every night and the occasional rendezvous behind the portables for a quick make-out session. I broke up with that boyfriend but we got back together several months later. In that period, we never said “I Love You,” but we both realized that it was a sore point in our relationship. Somehow, I never got to the place where I could say it to him or to myself and truly mean it. I’m sorry that it ever got to that and we broke up without ever discussing how we really felt about each other.
I’m now waiting for the day where I can find the man who understands my soul, inside and out, and can tell me that he loves me without ever hesitating to do so.
