Messiaen – St Francis of Assissi.
I wasn’t expecting an opera – serves me right for not reading the programme properly! Can’t say that I like opera very much but the orchestra was AMAZING. They had weird & wonderful instruments I’ve never seen before. 10 basses & 9 percussionists. I was especially impressed with an instrument that was a large swathe of fabric wound on a drum – sounded like a cross between silk curtains being drawn and the wind. There were 3 ondes martenots – early electronic instruments. Very strange hearing electronic sounds in with the orchestra. I kept thinking someones mobile phone was going off!

St Dunstan- in-the-West, concert for the centenary of Olivier Messiaen(1908-2008) 16 months ago

This really blew me away…... lifted me out of a nasty, persistent grey depression and enriched my spirit.
They played the quartet for the end of time- Quartuor pour la fin du temps. Messiaen wrote this whilst imprisoned by the nazi’s during world war 2. He discovered he was jailed with a cellist, violin player & clarinetist. They performed it for the first time to 5000 of their fellow prisoners in 1941.
I’d never heard of Messiaen before but lately seem to be attracted to classical music, which I know very little of. Followed my nose to this free luchtime concert in a beautiful church on Fleet street in the City.
